The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team just does not know how to lose anymore. The Lakers wrapped up their regular season by doing what they have been doing best: winning. With back-to-back victories over SUNY New Paltz and Buffalo State, Oswego locked in a perfect 8-0 record in SUNYAC play and grabbed the no. 1 seed heading into the conference tournament.
It has been a season to remember. After taking down SUNY Cortland earlier this month and snapping their insane 41-game conference win streak, the Lakers have been on fire. That win was the spark and now they are sitting on a 11-game winning streak, the longest in program history.
The first game was against the SUNY New Paltz Hawks at home and the Lakers dominated again. The game started with the Hawks opening the scoring less than a minute into the game, but the Lakers did not let it go easily and retaliated with five consecutive goals in the first period. Alexis Hill and Madison Davis were crucial, participating in four of those goals. The Lakers reduced the advantage to 5-2 at the end of the first period.
The second period also started with the Hawks opening the scoring and reducing the advantage to just two goals. Still, to control the game, Mackenzie Winn, with an assist from the star of the day, Davis, scored a goal that was followed by two more soon after, increasing the advantage to 8-3.z
The third period started the same as the other two, with the Hawks opening the scoring, but this time with two goals. However, the Lakers did not stop attacking and managed to increase their advantage, scoring five goals in under nine minutes. Taking the game to the last quarter practically decided it. With the Lakers having a sensational season, the win over the Hawks basically secured the number one position in the SUNYAC standings.
In the fourth quarter, the Hawks opened the scoring again, but it was not enough, as the game ended 14-7 in favor of the Lakers.
To conclude the regular season, the Lakers faced the Buffalo State Bengals on the road. But for the Lakers, it seemed that nothing had changed. Hill opened the scoring in less than two minutes and Winn extended the lead with nine minutes left in the first period. The Hawks even attempted to respond by scoring a goal, but the Lakers increased their lead until the end of the first period, ultimately making it 4-1.
The second period was no different, with the Lakers again dominating and Winn again being the star of the day, opening the scoring and increasing the Lakers’ lead to 7-2 while conceding just one goal to the Bengals in the second period. Despite the significant advantage, the game got more intense. The third period saw the most goals, with the Lakers scoring seven and the Bengals scoring four.
To conclude the fourth period, it was even better, with the Lakers conceding two goals but scoring three.
Now the teams await the results of round one to see who they will face in the home semifinals. Following the success of the season, the next matches will be held at home, with the potential final against SUNY Cortland again at Laker Turf Stadium.
