In a week packed with defining moments, the Oswego State women’s lacrosse team rewrote history: snapping SUNY Cortland’s jaw-dropping 41-game in-conference unbeaten streak.
It was not just that streak that was broken, the Red Dragons were also undefeated against the Lakers all-time coming into this matchup.
The mission was difficult, but the Lakers had the star of the day, Madison Davis. She scored three times and provided four assists in the Lakers’ 10-8 victory. It was a challenging and hard-fought game from start to finish. The Laker’s strong defense made the difference in the match. It all started with the Lakers taking a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes and closing the first period with a 3-1 lead.
Everything was going well for the Lakers until the middle of the second period, when the game changed. After conceding a goal, the Lakers reacted quickly to bring the score to 5-3. The Red Dragons adjusted and scored three goals in the last minutes of the second period, taking the lead to 6-5 at halftime. The third period was short, but the Lakers returned with Aubriana Green and Cassidy Croce scoring goals and tying the score at 7-7.
The fourth period was decisive for the teams. The Red Dragons broke the tie with less than two minutes to go, retaking the lead. That is when Davis and Mackenzie Winn appeared to decide the game. Davis scored at 11:34 and Winn turned the game around at 10:13 with an assist from Davis. Victory was on the way, with the Lakers defending themselves very well. To finish, Davis scored another goal with an assist from Winn, closing the historic score of 10-8 for the first time.
The second game was another one of those games that lifted the team’s spirits, a 19-7 home win over SUNY Plattsburgh. The game was decided on senior day, as the team said goodbye to five players. The star of the day could not have been anyone other than Winn, who is leaving the team this season as a transfer player, with two goals and six assists. Special mention goes to Julia Quirk, who scored six goals in the rout.
The game was already over at halftime, with the score at 10-4. The Lakers just kept increasing their lead and ensuring their undefeated streak. An important issue was saving themselves to avoid fatigue and tiredness for the most important games of the season.
The last game was a tough road win against the SUNY Potsdam Bears. It was a game of two halves. The Lakers started out overwhelming again, leading 8-4 at halftime after a hat trick by star player Cassidy Croce.
After halftime, things changed. The Lakers even extended their lead to 11-5, but the Bears fought back and went all out, scoring three goals in a row for the first time in the game. Croce scored another to maintain the big lead, but the Bears kept attacking. Thanks to the Lakers’ good defense, the game ended 13-12 with a lot of pressure at the end.
Now the Lakers face another challenging game against SUNY New Paltz at home on April 18.
