The Oswego women’s lacrosse team crushed the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons on April 4. The game was away from home and was exciting from start to finish.
The first goal came quickly, with the Red Dragons scoring less than a minute into the game. The Lakers attacked three more times to recover the initial goal they had conceded and managed to tie things up seven minutes into the game. The game became more intense. The Red Dragons came out with more intensity and scored two goals soon after, increasing the lead to 3-1. It did not take long for the Lakers to return the goals and tie the game again with a goal by Julia Quirk, the top scorer of the day for the Lakers and another one by Cassidy Croce. With five minutes left on the scoreboard, the Red Dragons came out with everything, increasing their lead again to 5-3.
It would be the Lakers’ first loss in SUNYAC, so they had to tighten up and respond in the following quarters. And that was exactly what the Lakers did in the second quarter. Alexis Hill led the team, tying the game with two goals. One of the assists on this goal came from Mackenzie Winn, finishing the day with six goal participations, with one goal and five assists. The lead grew with the Lakers scoring four more goals to secure the 9-5 halftime lead.
Kelsey Van Alstyne, the women’s lacrosse head coach for the Red Dragons, was essential for the team’s comeback in the third quarter. Needing a win, the Red Dragons returned stronger in the game and scored to reduce the lead with five minutes to go. With the momentum, the Red Dragons caused three cards for the Lakers, a yellow card on Madison Davis and a green card for Aubriana Green and Sophie Ruschin. This allowed the Red Dragons to score two more and reduce the lead to just one goal. Quirk was also essential for scoring one at the end of the third quarter. The last quarter was decisive. It was a very tight game with few opportunities for both teams. That is when it all turned around for the Lakers. The team completely dominated the Red Dragons in the last quarter. They scored seven more goals in the last 15 minutes and ensured an undefeated record in a challenging SUNYAC game.
The Lakers’ next game is at home against SUNY Cortland, another very important game to hold SUNYAC’s highest standing.
