Fall Laker Hockey Sports Women's Hockey

Oswego women’s ice hockey retains undefeated season

The Oswego State women’s hockey team took on the Canton Kangaroos in a fast-paced match that became their third straight win in regular season games.

The Lakers won the opening face-off, with Rachel Corbett, #18, ready to take the lead as the team broke into the opposing zone. Canton’s defense saw a string of poor passes, allowing #26 of the Lakers, Sydney Pinti, to make the first of many clean shots at the Kangaroos’ goal. However, it was caught by goalie Molly Lenihan. This brought the fight down to the home team’s side as the Kangaroos took the offensive, leading to a swift shot through Laker goalie Lexi Levy’s knees just 3.48 into the game. Kyra O’Keefe, #92, made the goal, which Desiree Snook, #20, assisted. Instead of letting it discourage the Lakers, Oswego used the small victory to fuel their own with sharp shift changes and several close, yet poorly aimed, shots of their own. The Kangaroos were hit with two penalties for slashing and hooking in the final five minutes of the game, the kill bringing the home team to a better offense that continued until the end of the period. #74, assistant captain Simone Bednardik scored, assisted by #2, team captain Mack Hull and #3, Helen Van Damme. The Lakers maintained a strong offense as the period came to a close, with the expectation of merely running out the clock. However, #24 Shaye Jasiel, scored with just three seconds remaining.

The second period saw the Lakers dominate the ice with more spunk than usual, quickly taking down the Kangaroos’ offense. Despite the energy, it was an uneventful period that saw small altercations between the teams and no repercussions, other than a penalty at the end of the period for Bednardik.

The third period began on a penalty kill for the Lakers, but that did not hinder their ability to maintain offense. The majority of the period was an exciting back-and-forth on both ends of the ice. Holes in the Kangaroos’ defense led to the final goal of the night by #12, Tessa Mucha, assisted by #8, Erika Parenti and #5, Brittany Iverson.
