Megan vs. Tory: case decision needs no reevaluation

In Megan Thee Stallion’s new documentary, “ In Her Words,” she admits to lying to Gaye King about having  sex with Tory Lanez. Despite this information already being revealed in court, during the trial, it still caused an uproar on social media. Some people wanted to villainize her, call her a liar and say “Free Tory.” Others agreed with her for lying, said that they would have done it too and dismissed its relevance to what happened to Lanez. One notable comment made by Houston rapper Slim Thug when he was defending Megan thee Stallion was, “who the f*ck wanna say who they slept with on ABC news… You ain’t gotta tell people who you slept with, weirdo. The f*ck would I tell you. Would you go on the news and tell someone who you f*cking. That’s the dumbest sh*t for her to even ask her that anyway.” It is notable because he is one of the first few people I have seen that has made his support for her this public since her documentary has come out and basically expressed his displeasure with what Lanez did. I think that is my problem with this situation.

People are so focused on the fact that she lied about having sex with him that they forgot about what he actually did. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Lanez shot five times at the victim [Megan Thee Stallion] and wounded her. They also stated that after viewing the evidence he was “found guilty by jurors of one count of assault with an automatic firearm and found true the allegations that he caused great bodily injury and used a firearm. He also was convicted of one count of carrying an unregistered loaded firearm in a vehicle and once count of discharge with gross negligence.” And what was this over? A disagreement. An argument. Whatever, you want to call it, but it was not something worth pulling out a lethal weapon for.

Therefore, whether or not they had sex, should not matter. If your reaction to an argument or disagreement with someone is to pull out a gun and shoot at them five times, then we have a bigger issue to focus on than their sex lives. Then it gets worse because while the trial was happening, this man was allegedly taunting her. In her documentary she states that he texted her saying how he was watching her on live and that she looked so sad, how she had to change her number and get a restraining order against him (which he violated) and how in one of his music videos he was cutting up horse legs with the name “HGS special” in the background.

Overall, it seems that he was harassing her and according to District Attorney Gascòn, over the past three years he engaged in “a pattern of conduct that was intended to intimidate Ms. Pete [Megan thee Stallion] and silence her truths from being heard.” These are not actions that can be ignored because not only was he found guilty of shooting her, there seems to be a history of him taunting her and harassing her which just speaks to his character.Based on his actions and the allegations against him, Tory Lanez seems to be a very violent man. There should not be people trying to disregard his actions and saying “Free Tory” because she admitted to sleeping with him. Yes, her lying is wrong, but it does not take away from the violence she endured and the pain she felt from his actions.
