Oswego women’s soccer team falls to New Paltz 4-0 on the road

The Oswego Women’s Soccer team falls to New Paltz 4-0.

On, Oct. 26, the 9-6-1 Oswego State women’s soccer team traveled to play against the 13-2-2 SUNY New Paltz Hawks. Coming into the game, the Lakers won 3/4 games and look to carry that momentum into this game. The game, however, did not go as the Lakers planned, as they were unable to bury any goals and fell 0-4.

The first half started out slow, with neither team scoring for the first 25 minutes. However, the Lakers’ defense faced pressure at the very start of the game, being outshot 10-1 in the first half. Despite the lack of offense, the Lakers escaped the first half, only allowing one goal at the 26-minute mark.

With only a one-goal deficit and the game still very much winnable, the Lakers went into the second half with hopes of coming back. Unfortunately for the Lakers, the Hawks were able to remain in control for the rest of the game.

Just like the first, the second half started off slow, with neither team able to strike for the first 15 minutes. Then at the 61-minute mark, the Hawks extended their lead to two goals. From then on, the Hawks started to run away with the game, scoring their 3rd goal at the 70-minute mark. Finally, the Hawks put the icing on the cake, scoring their 4th goal at the 85-minute mark and essentially putting the game away, the Lakers lose 0-4.

By the end of the game, Lakers defender Lexie Thompson and forward Kaylee Elliot were the only ones able to get a shot off against the Hawks’ defense.

The Lakers’ offense struggled to gain any momentum, only getting two shots on net the entire game. Despite best efforts from the defense and goalkeeper Perri Anderson, who made four saves in the game, the pressure generated from the Hawks’ offense was just too much. The Hawks also ended the game with eight corners as opposed to the Lakers’ two.

Following the loss, the Lakers end their regular season with a SUNYAC record of 5-3-1 and an overall record of 9-6-1, which puts them at the #3 in the SUNYAC Standings.

The Oswego State Lakers now look to put this loss behind them as they now head to the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament, where they will face off against the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons, who finished at #6 in the SUNYAC standings with an overall record of 5-4- 0. The Lakers will also be coming into this game with a chip on their shoulder, as they lost 0-2 in their previous matchup earlier in the season. The game will be held at Laker Turf Stadium on Nov. 2 at 1:00 pm.
