Coming off their dominant 4-1 win against SUNY Delhi on Sept. 15, the 5-0-1 Oswego State Lakers look to remain undefeated and defend their home turf against the 1-1-3 Skidmore University Thoroughbreds.
In the first half, it was the Lakers who held control for the most part, outshooting the Thoroughbreds 10-3. The first two shots came from Matthew Sturman and Ian Husselbeck, both missing the goal. It was not until the 20-minute mark that the first shot on net was recorded with a strike coming from Husselback that was blocked by the Skidmore goalkeeper.
The Lakers’ defense did not face much pressure in the first half, with goalkeeper Kyle Rose only needing to face one save.
On the other hand, the offense kept up the pressure, with Kyle Gehnrich firing a shot on goal at the 23-minute mark that was saved.
For the rest of the half, the ball was mainly in Laker possession as they tried to get something going offensively.
Being granted seven corner kicks to Skidmore’s two, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities.
After a final attempt to break the tie with a shot on net from Lakers Scout McCumiskey, both teams go into halftime scoreless.
The second half was not much different as both teams struggled to get anything going offensively. Skidmore recorded the first goal of the second half at the 50-minute mark, but Rose was able to make the save. The Lakers then followed with a shot from Benjamin Brooks that missed the net.
It was not until the 83-minute mark that the tie would finally be broken as Skidmore was able to fire a shot past Kyle, leaving the Lakers in a one-goal deficit with seven minutes to go.
After a rather lackluster performance throughout the second half, the Lakers offense was starting to apply pressure as time was running out.
Finally it was Kyle Hanner who was able to capitalize off of his own shot and fire one past the Skidmore goaltender, giving the Lakers their first goal of the game and tying it up 1-1 at the 85-minute mark.
As time was expiring, the Lakers were still bringing their best efforts to come out of this game with a win as Gehnrich shot one on net at the 86-minute mark.
However, the Lakers’ last minute efforts were unfortunately not enough and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Although they may not have come away with the win, the Lakers undefeated streak stays alive as they now make their way to face off against the 0-5-1 SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons.
