Editor-in-Chief’s column: To-do Lists: formulating early Autumn plans

Time is moving unbelievably fast. We are already into our third publication of the year! On top of that, we are already a month into classes. Can you believe that?

The “first day of Autumn” has already come to pass, but it does not feel like Fall just yet. Honestly, there is no better season than early Autumn; the weather is not freezing yet but it is not scorching hot either. We are slowly moving into that season, as the weather still sits at a comfortable 70 degrees, but as I am writing this I can see that next week’s weather drops into the 50’s.

There is nothing better than the feeling of Autumn in Upstate New York. The leaves start turning into those beautiful colors and the bugs start slowly disappearing. Sports as a whole come into full swing, with the NFL season already chugging along and the NBA season on the horizon. Those classic Autumn products have hit the shelves whether it be the candles, Halloween decorations or all the pumpkins in the world. So in the spirit of the Fall season, I will be going over my “Autumn to-do list,” which is basically things I want to do before it is quickly out of season.

Let us start with corn mazes. I am sure you can call it childish, but who does not love a good corn maze? You start at one end with a bunch of friends searching for the exit, but if we are being honest, not a lot of people can figure out corn mazes that quickly. However, I also like what is usually paired with a corn maze, which are apple orchards and pumpkin patches.

As a kid, I would go to an apple orchard at least once a year. I would not actually take and bag any of the apples; instead I would just walk around with family or friends and pick off apples, wash them and eat them right away. It would always have to be a yellow apple, mainly because they are by far the sweetest.

I also love carving pumpkins. I hate how much work it takes to remove the guts of the pumpkin, but the carving part is what you are doing it for. I am not very good at it though and usually whatever I carve is the worst of the group.

I think the top of this to-do list has to end with a horror movie binge-fest. I absolutely adore the horror movie genre and usually run out to the theaters if I ever hear that a new horror movie is coming out. I will go on the record to say I have watched more “bad” horror movies than I can count, whether that would be 2016’s “Cabin Fever,” specifically 2005’s “The Fog,”or even most recently, last year’s “Winnie The-Pooh: Blood and Honey”. However, the good outweighs the bad, with 1978’s “Halloween,”2017’s “Get Out” and best of all, 2018’s “A Quiet Place.”

I believe the worst part of the horror movie genre is how long these franchises have been dragging out their characters. There are 13 “Halloween” movies and believe me when I say they should have stopped at two films before picking it up back in 2018. My point being that once you ditch your original story-line, it is tough on your audience to find out what really happened and what did not happen when you decide to reboot it. I think the only franchise that has dragged it out but at least kept the same flowing storyline is “Saw,” but even that gets confusing from time-to-time.

Anyways, thank you so much for reading The Oswegonian. Our staff and I put a ton of time into it and we appreciate every one of you.
