Oswego State women’s soccer wins before SUNYAC begins

The Oswego State women’s soccer team recorded a loss on Saturday Sept. 14 and a win on Tuesday Sept. 17.

Both of the games for the Lakers were non-conference matchups; they faced St. Lawrence University on Saturday, and Keuka College on Tuesday.

The Lakers posted a blank scoreboard on Saturday as they traveled to Canton, NY to face the St. Lawrence Saints. The Saints opened the scoring up in the 15th minute of the game when Grace Mochnal put one past Perri Anderson off an assist from Meredith Donahue. The momentum soon continued in the 20th minute when Mia Cence put the Saints up 2-0 for her first goal of the season. The Saints kept pushing the pace and put the Lakers into a 3 goal deficit when Lilly Stone buried a goal in the 25th minute.

The score stood 3-0 at halftime, and the Lakers needed a lot of work to do to come back.

St. Lawrence wasted no time putting points up on the scoreboard after halftime, as Madison King-Thurber put one in the back of the net off of a series of beautiful passes from Grace Mochnal and Sydney Keenan. This goal came just three minutes after halftime in the 48th minute, and gave the Saints a 4-0 lead, which would be the final score of the game. The one-sided St. Lawrence affair proved to be too much for the Lakers , as they were out shot 16-9 in the game, in which only two of the shots were on goal. Lakers goalkeeper Perri Anderson finished the game with four saves out of the eight shots on goal.

The Lakers however, put up a much better performance on Tuesday, posting a 1-0 shutout victory against the Keuka College Wolves. Home field advantage may have come in handy at the Laker Turf Field in Oswego on Tuesday, as the women’s team were able to redeem themselves against the Wolves. The Lakers tested the Wolves defense all throughout the first half, with Oswego out-shooting Keuka 15-1, but the score remained knotted at zero when halftime rolled around.

The game remained 0-0 until Jackie Marquardt rifled a goal off of a corner kick assisted by Lynnae Russell in the 61st minute of the game. The goal was Marquardt’s first of the season. The Lakers defense was able to shut down any opportunities by Keuka for the rest of the game, and the score remained 1-0 until the final whistle. The game seemed to be in full control of the Lakers with the team outshooting Keuka 30-5, despite the 1-0 victory. The Lakers pitched a shutout thanks to Anderson making two critical saves.

The Lakers 1-1 record from the last two games brings their overall record to 4-3 on the season, with important SUNYAC play coming up. The game against Keuka College marks Oswego’s last non-conference matchup for the regular season. All of the nine games ahead will count towards their conference standings, and the competition will intensify.

The Lakers will get a short break between now and their intensified game schedule, which starts on Sept. 28 with a home matchup against SUNY Oneonta for both teams’ first SUNYAC game. This 11-day break will give the team time to practice and get ready for the most important games of the season.

Following the home matchup against Oneonta on the 28th, the Lakers will then travel to SUNY Canton on Oct. 2nd, host their Senior Day against SUNY Morrisville on Oct. 5th, and then travel to SUNY Cortland on Oct. 9, all within a week.
