Fall Field Hockey Sports

Oswego State field hockey falls in road games increasing losing streak

Coming off the back of Oswego State field hockey’s first win and loss the previous week, the Lakers headed to the North Country to take on the St. Lawrence University Saints, who themselves were 0-2 in record. Rain was coming down at the delayed start between the Lakers and the Saints, but the players took to action undeterred. The saints got some early chances deep around the Lakers net, but key saves from freshman goalie Sam Krautheim kept the game scoreless in the first minutes. But it was graduate midfielder Bryleigh Beauchat who broke the silence just five minutes in, getting her second goal of the season for the Lakers. The rest of the first quarter was controlled by the Saints, but they managed no goals thus far.

The second quarter began with more of the same, with the Saints getting some important corner chances. The Saints’ forechecking efforts would beared fruit, and St. Lawrence captain Caroline Hamilton evened the score halfway through the quarter. Minutes later the lead changed hands, with sophomore midfielder Maddy Shaw making it 2-1, where the first half ended.

The Lakers started the second half flying. With Oswego’s resurgence in offense, the play was much more back and forth, this giving the Lakers many more chances to add to the score. But the Saints did not lighten their pressure, stifling the Lakers later chances to get it out. The Saints kept their offense going, but neither team was able to find twine in the 3rd.

This time it was St. Lawrence’s turn to start out flying, getting early opportunities to start the 4th. This combined with mistakes in the midfield from the Lakers started to spell trouble for Oswego. They were able to generate offense midway through, but the Saints rushed into the Lakers’ end, and though it looked like they put away the game winner, the goal was called off. However, it did not matter as both Charlotte Lehr and Maja Helmer scored goals for the Saints in the last five minutes of play. Final score 4-1 Saints, leaving the Lakers with a losing record.

Following the loss, they headed out west to face the 0-4 St. John Fisher University Cardinals. Sunnier weather greeted them in East Rochester, so did an on time start at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. The Cardinals looked to gain decent control off the draw, and much time was spent in the Laker’s end. It was midway through the quarter though, when the Lakers started gaining some traction. More rushes and more chances came, but neither team managed to score in the first.

The second started much more back and forth, with a slight edge going to the Lakers. Rushes went deep on both sides, and much time was spent around both nets. Then a penalty shot came for the Cardinals, but Krautheim, who had been given the start for this game as well, stood tall and made a diving stick save to keep it scoreless. The Cardinals kept piling on pressure, but only a few shots came as a result of the Lakers’ defense. Thus the first half ended with nil on either side of the scoreboard.

More back and forth was given to start the third quarter. But just a few minutes in, another penalty shot came, this one for senior Molly Fisher of the Cardinals. This time it

found twine. Her goal opened up the floodgates for the Cardinals, pouring on all the offensive might they could manage. Minutes later they found paydirt again, courtesy of senior Sarah Woods off a deflection. 2-0 was now the score, and it stayed that way through the end of the third.

The fourth saw the Lakers get many more chances offensively, but they could not seem to find the back of the net. To make matters worse, with less than 2 minutes left in the contest, Molly Fisher scored her second goal of the game, to put it away at a 3 to nothing loss for Oswego. The Lakers head home with a record of 1-3, and they will look to reverse their fortunes on, Sep. 18, when they take on the Keuka Wolves at Laker Stadium.
