It can be scary trying new things. Humans thrive on routines as we are creatures of habit. We like to feel in control and feel that things are predictable. While humans do thrive on routines, getting out of your comfort zone is necessary to grow emotionally.
Why is it so scary to get out of your comfort zone? As mentioned before, we like predictability, so when we are faced with a decision, we are more likely to go with the answer that feels most comfortable and most familiar. There are many benefits to stepping out of your comfort zone and one way to do that is to study abroad.
Getting out of your comfort zone and studying abroad go hand-in-hand. You are faced with challenges and experiences that you have never faced before. Studying abroad has so many benefits because you are embracing a new culture. There is so much to learn about cultures different from yours. You can experience different social customs, foods, ideas and ways of life. This can make you more accepting and educated of different cultures.
This is also the best time to learn a new language. According to the University of the Potomac, learning a new language has a multitude of benefits; increased attention span, increased brain stimulation, improved memory as well as boosting your self esteem. By learning the language of your host country, you can connect with locals and really immerse yourself. There are also ample opportunities to make friends, meet new people and make meaningful connections. Studying abroad also gives you the chance to travel to neighboring countries while being abroad. For example, if you are studying in Europe, countries are closer together so oftentimes to visit another country, it is just a short plane ride or train trip away. All of these experiences can get you to come out of your comfort zone and challenge you to grow as a person.
I am currently studying abroad in Paris, France and it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. At first, when I arrived in Paris back in January I thought “Oh my goodness, what have I done?” I moved to a country with a language I did not speak, a culture that I did not understand and I knew absolutely nobody. Eventually, I made good friends, started speaking French and have a better understanding of French culture. I have traveled to different countries with the friends I have made and had so many positive experiences that I do not want it to end. I am happy with my life in France. I have grown so much in my time abroad and have learned so much about myself.
If you are thinking about studying abroad, my best advice would be to take a leap of faith and do it if you have the means. It has changed my life so much for the better and has completely altered my way of thinking. Do not let your fears hold you back, trust yourself and get out of your comfort zone.
