Oswego State men’s lacrosse team fall to top two standing teams in SUNYAC

The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team had their nine-game winning streak snapped at the hands of their SUNYAC rival, the SUNY Geneseo Knights. This was the Lakers’ first in-conference loss of the 2024 season.

The first five minutes of the game were very back and forth, with neither team able to put the ball in each other’s nets. This was until just over the ten-minute mark where the Knights drilled in the first goal of the game to make it 1-0. Just over four minutes later, the Knights found the net again to make it 2-0. Cole Bollin put up a few shots, but none of them fell in the last five minutes as the Lakers trailed heading into the second quarter.

This 2-0 Knights lead quickly became 3-0, as within the first two minutes of the second quarter they drilled the ball into the back of the net. Multiple Lakers turnovers had Oswego on their heels, but they were not done fighting. Just over the 11-minute mark Connor Aspinall scored the first goal for the Lakers to make it 3-1. One minute later off a man-up opportunity, Corey O’Connor pegged a shot in as the Lakers crawled back 3-2. This candle of hope was blown out as the Knights found the net a minute later to make it 4-2. Hayden Coney was able to respond to make it 4-3, but back-to-back goals by the Knights made it 6-3 with a minute left. With 11 seconds on the clock, O’Connor threw a dart to the back of the net after a Lakers timeout. The Lakers were down 6-4 heading into the third quarter.

The Knights began to run away with the game in the third quarter, as the score became 7-4 under 90 seconds into the period. The Lakers did not put up a single shot until there were just over ten minutes left, where coincidentally, Max Brodman found the net to make it 7-5. This was the closest the Lakers got to taking a lead in this game, as the Knights rattled off three goals to finish out the third quarter to make the score 10-5 heading into the fourth.

Three unanswered goals to finish out the third quickly became eight unanswered goals, as the Knights hit five goals before the Lakers could respond. O’Connor scored the last goal of the game, albeit not worth much, as the Lakers fell to the Knights 15-6.

The skid continued as the Lakers moved on to play the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons on April 24.

The Lakers picked up a quick goal in the first quarter, as Emmett Starowizc found the back of the net to make it 1-0. In no more than ten seconds, the Red Dragons responded with a goal of their own to tie it 1-1. This quickly became a much bigger hole than the Lakers expected as they fell further and further down, as the quarter ended at a score of 4-1 Red Dragons.

The second quarter the Lakers did not put up a score, as the Red Dragons dominated and rattled off five more goals. The score was 9-1 heading into the third quarter.

This downward spiral for the Lakers did not end until the Red Dragons had the score at 12-1, which a goal from Tyler Stevenson made it 12-2. This was responded quickly by another Red Dragons goal, making it 13-2. Four seconds later, Logan Prescott made it 13-3 for the Lakers.

The Lakers ended up scoring six goals against the Red Dragons, but the score at the end was unfortunately for Oswego, 20-6.

Both of these losses came against the no.1 (Red Dragons) and no.2 (Knights) teams in the SUNYAC. The Lakers finish up their season against SUNY Oneonta, but will likely see one of either SUNY Geneseo or Cortland in the playoffs.
