The Oswego women’s lacrosse team secured their fifth-place qualification for the playoffs. The Lakers had their four-game winning streak ended at the hands of the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons. However, all they needed was big win against the Plattsburgh State Cardinals, where the Lakers dominated. Considering that three of those wins from the winning streak came against teams that are now eliminated from the SUNYAC. On the other hand, the Lakers have beaten teams at a higher rank than them. For example, winning against SUNY New Paltz on the road.
This team has powerful offensive qualities, especially Isabella Lembo and Sela Wiley’s plays, which significantly contribute. I recently spoke with women’s lacrosse coach Brittany Howard about Wiley. Howard said what you already imagine watching Lakers games: that Wiley is a leader on and off the field.
If the Lakers can close down more and avoid spaces, especially in counter-attacks, this team could surprise in the championship. Now, the Lakers will face SUNY Brockport. The last match against them was a 10-14 loss away from home. In that match, the Lakers started well in the first period but fell significantly in the second, conceding seven goals. Even so, at the end of the match, the Lakers had the most shots, 28-23.
I believe it will be a challenging game but very important for the history of this program. If the Lakers come in focused as always and play four halves as best as they can, victory is not impossible. The record against Brockport away from home is 4-11. However, last year, the Lakers won one over them.
