Oswego State women’s lacrosse crushes SUNY Fredonia by 16 goals

The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team traveled to SUNY Brockport to take on the Golden Eagles on April 4. Despite having an early lead at the end of the first quarter, Brockport found their footing offensively and kept a strong momentum to defeat the Lakers 14-10.

Julia Quirk sparked momentum for Oswego by scoring the first goal two minutes into play. Isabella Lembo scored in the same fashion, and later Madison Davis netted one of her own. Noelle Smith and Cassidy Croce each scored a goal to bring the Lakers up 5-0. Oswego kept Brockport at bay and limited them to one goal scored with under two minutes remaining in the first.

The Golden Eagles wasted no time in getting to work in the second quarter. Brockport scored their second goal two minutes in and their third came shortly after. They won the next draw control and maintained possession while flying up to the goal and netting one in the top right corner. They scored again less than two minutes later, which made it a tied 5-5 game. Both teams scored shortly after to make it a tie game once again. The Golden Eagles maintained majority possession the rest of the quarter and scored twice more.

The Golden Eagles added another two and ended the third in a thriller. With five seconds left on the clock, Brockport scored on a free-position shot from the left to make the score 11-8.

Brockport scored on a pass from behind the net to take a bigger lead in the final quarter. Croce scored goal number nine for the Lakers, less than a minute later, after pushing past a sea of defensemen. The Golden Eagles later scored twice more which made the score 14-9. Lembo scored with 50 seconds remaining, but it was not enough to overtake Brockport.

The Lakers traveled to Fredonia on April 10 to take on the Blue Devils. Lembo netted a game-high of eight goals for the season which contributed to the Lakers 20-4 win.

Fredonia began the game with a bang and took immediate possession after the starting draw control. They scored the first goal just 12 seconds into the game. Lembo netted one in the top corner to retaliate right back, and just ten seconds later, Davis scored goal number two for the Lakers. Quirk then had back-to-back goals. Lembo took advantage of a free-position opportunity and netted a low shot to the right, which boosted Oswego 5-1 over Fredonia.

In the second quarter, Sela Wiley scored right on target in the middle of the goal. At the 12:43 mark, Fredonia scored their second goal after a quick passing play. The Lakers later had a free position opportunity but the shot was deflected and quickly picked up by the Blue Devil goalie. Fredonia took a shot that bounced from inside the goalie crease to the back of the net which made the score 6-3. Almost two minutes later, Croce added one of her own to keep a safe lead from Fredonia. After five minutes of scoreless play, Sadie Zemanick scored off of a bounce shot to add to the point differential. Quirk took a free position shot on the right side to push Oswego up by six, making the score 9-3.

Fredonia took advantage of a free position opportunity and scored with a low shot to start the third. Oswego took possession from the next draw control and Wiley passed to Davis for goal number 10. Lembo had a hot streak and scored four consecutive goals. Quirk and Wiley added one each to end the quarter at 16-4.

With 12:09 left in the game, taking advantage of play with a man-up, Lembo scored. Lembo, Alexis Hill and Davis each scored once more in the final quarter of the game to take an overwhelming 20-4 win.
