Finally! Change is being made to the Hewitt quad, and just in time for the weather to start warming up. It has been announced that the quad will be turned into a huge outdoor swimming area for students to relax when the weather gets warmer.
I am very glad that the eye-sore that is the current Hewitt quad is being replaced with something that can actually be used. I I think that this change will actually entice students to want to hang out on campus, specifically in the quad area. It will also make the campus look a lot more lively and well-kept as the area will be redone in order to accommodate this big change.
However, I am a little upset that it took until my final semester here to make the change, so I and many other graduating students will have limited opportunities to enjoy this new addition.
Also, why the sudden change? Just a few weeks ago there were no plans to change anything, and now we return from spring break and there are plans to completely re-do a major part of campus.
This area could also be utilized as an outdoor ice skating rink during the winter months. Instead of only having the indoor rink inside Marano Campus Center, the outdoor rink would allow for both to be a little less busy. This could also provide for more open skate opportunities as the indoor skating rink only has a select number of dates where it is offered.
I think that this will be an amazing way to bring in more undergraduate students. Not only will it be more aesthetically pleasing, it will also show off a new unique activity and feature that SUNY schools do not usually have.
I am unsure of how long it will take for this new pool to be created, but hopefully it does not take as long as Hewitt has taken to be completed. If all goes to plan, I would imagine that it would be ready to go by the start of the fall semester, meaning all seniors like myself will not be able to enjoy it.
Only time will tell whether or not this will truly look better than the quad, but if I had to guess, it will be a night-and-day transformation. I am very excited to see these changes come to life, even though I will not be here to enjoy them.
Happy April Fools!
