Oswego State swimming and diving breaks multiple records at SUNYACs

The Oswego State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished up their season in the annual SUNYAC Championships, a four-day event held in the Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center in Buffalo. 

To start the first night, the women’s 200 medley relay team of Isabelle Dague, Emily Lotito, Abigail Hinman and Aurora Jarvie finished fourth with a time of 1:54.47. Likewise, the men’s team of Matthew Dambra, Zachary Brown, Lucas McGarry and Vincent Mullen earned fourth with a time of 1:34.81. The Lakers’ next event was the 800 freestyle relay, with a timing of 8:21.05. McKenna Briggs, Jarvie, Anna Baker and Dague finished sixth. The men’s team of Nathan Ratta Vine, Jacob Sarnowski, Ryan Liedka and Ryan Murphy finished sixth in 7:18.96. 

The second day for the Lakers began with the 500 freestyle. Lotito finished 12th in the initial round, advancing to the B-final. She swam a 5:35.88 in the finals, finishing 14th overall. Next was the 200 individual medley prelims, which saw three female swimmers advance to the B-final. Aurora Jarvie finished tenth, Anna Baker 12th and Maura Waite 15th. Baker finished 12th in the finals with a time of 2:24.32. Waite was 14th with a time of 2:24.70, while Jarvie was 15th with a time of 2:24.80. Brown placed fourth in the men’s 200 individual medley prelims. In the finals, he finished fourth again with a time of 1:55.25. Ratta Vine advanced to the B-finals after finishing 12th in the preliminary round. Ratta Vine finished 14th in the finals with a time of 2:00.29. 

Matthew Dambra finished sixth in the 50 Freestyle prelims, qualifying him to return to the A-finals. In the finals, he swam a 21.77, finishing seventh. The women saw three swimmers make finals for the 50 freestyle: Jayna Laferriere, Briggs and Alexia Lemus. In finals, Laferriere placed seventh with a time of 25.03. Briggs finished 11th with a time of 25.80 and Lemus placed 15th finishing with a time of 26.23. The night continued with the 200 freestyle relay when Dambra, Mullen, Ratta Vine and Brown finished fifth with a time of 1:27.43. Jarvie, Briggs, Lemus and Laferriere finished fourth in 1:40.83. Serena Bardin finished 12th in the women’s one-meter diving preliminary round, scoring 314.30. Amber Burke finished 14th with a score of 251.75.

The third night was full of record breakers, as Brown and Dambra both cemented their scores in Lakers history. Brown beat his own school record and the meet record for the 100 breaststroke by .04 in his first-place preliminary performance of 55.53. In the finals, he came back even quicker, winning first place with a 55.21. This finals time smashed the school and meet records while also breaking the conference record. Dambra broke the school record for the men’s 100 backstroke by .22 with a time of 53.24 to finish seventh. In the finals, he finished eighth with a time of 53.71. The night closed with the 400 medley relay as the women’s team of Dague, Lotito, Hinman and Laferriere took fourth place with a time of 4:14.24. The men’s team of Dambra, Ratta Vine, Brown and Mullen finished seventh with a time of 3:33.08.

The fourth and final night had another school record broken, as Brown rebroke his score in the 200 breaststroke. Brown won the men’s 200 breaststroke prelims and finished second in the finals with a time of 2:03.05, breaking his own school record. The women’s 200 backstroke saw all four swimmers advance to the finals. In the preliminary round, Dague finished seventh, Waite tenth and Fion Hon twelveth. Ashton Laird finished 17th as a first alternate and advanced to the B-finals via a scratch. In the finals, Dague finished seventh with a time of 2:17.20, Hon 11th with a time of 2:20.39, Waite 12th with a time of 2:20.44, and Laird 15th with a time of 2:27.22.

The Lakers men’s team scored 294 points, which was fifth out of eight teams. The Lakers women’s team scored 357 points, which was fourth of eight. This is the last time the Lakers will compete until the 2024-25 season.
