The Oswego men’s hockey team is coming off hot after this past weekend, recording two wins in back to back days.
Their first test was against Anna Maria College on Jan. 26. The first period started out a bit slow with neither team really taking an advantage in the game. The story for this game was penalties, as 13 minutes into the first period the Lakers would capitalize on a penalty committed by the Amcats and took a 1-0 lead thanks to Tyler Flack with an assist from Quinn Warmuth and Connor Gatto. The first period ended with the Lakers leading 1-0.
The second period was different from the first as the Lakers with a 1-0 lead took their foot off the gas, allowing the Amcats to come back into the game. The Amcats were physical and the Lakers did not adapt. The Lakers ended up conceding a goal courtesy of Giovanni Perillo with an assist by Spencer Carpenter. The Lakers shook this off and played better as the period went on. The score was 1-1 heading into the final period.
The third period was a rollercoaster. Tensions were high and it showed as there were 12 penalties committed by the Lakers and the Amcats. It started with Amcat Samson Mouland committing a hitting in the back penalty leading to a five-minute power play for Oswego. The Lakers would pounce on this opportunity, scoring not one but two goals in the last minute of the penalty due to shots by Cam Symons and Matt McQuade. Six minutes later the Lakers scored again, this time at full strength thanks Drake Semrad and finished off by Thomas Rocco making the score of the game 4-1 Oswego. The Amcats were unphased, as immediately after this they ripped off two goals by Guillaume Coulumbe and Pearce Baker in the next 30 seconds of the game. After this, the game calmed down as both teams fought hard to gain possession and score again. The final goal came from Flack who scored an empty-net goal with a minute left. Oswego won the game by a score of 5-3.
The Lakers also took on SUNY Morrisville on Jan. 27 in an easier game for the Lakers. It started off fast as just a minute in, Rocco Andreacchi scored a goal putting the Lakers up 1-0 early. As the period got underway, Oswego settled in on offense, testing Morrisville goalie Garrett Boyonoski with multiple shots. It did not take long for the Lakers to once again find the back of the net, as Thomas Rocco finished on a goal created by Connor Sleeth and Matt McQuade. Despite the Lakers’ defense, the Mustangs were able to capitalize on a scramble in front of the Lakers’ net. This put the Mustangs on the board with five minutes left as the period ended 2-1.
The second period lacked scoring on either side, both teams would swap penalties but neither team was able to capitalize. The period ended in a stalemate, and still a 2-1 score.
In the final period, the Lakers did not let up. Gatto added to the lead just under two minutes in, making it 3-1. The final goal of the game was scored at right around the 13-minute mark by Brock Krulicki. He was assisted by Jackson Arcan and Daniel Colabufo. The Lakers held onto the lead until the end with a final score being 4-1.
This marks five wins in a row for the Lakers and they are going to need all the momentum they can get. They head into the final stretch of the season starting with SUNY Brockport at home on Feb. 2, then on the road against SUNY Geneseo on Feb. 3.
