Academy Awards snub ‘Barbie’ from Best Director, Best Leading Actress nominations

“Barbie” took the world by storm this summer with its stacked cast, incredible writing and directing by Greta Gerwig (“Little Women”), message of girlhood and songs that have already won several awards. The Oscar nominations have just recently come out and fans are upset about the nominations for “Barbie,” or rather lack of them.

“Barbie” has received eight Oscar nominations. Ryan Gosling (“The Gray Man”) has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor as well as America Ferrera (“Dumb Money”) for best supporting actress which are both deserved because of their stellar performances, specifically Ferrera’s incredible acting and monologue. “Barbie” also received nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Picture.

Margot Robbie’s (“Babylon”) incredible performance as Barbie has not been recognized in the nominations for Best Leading Actress even though her performance was praised by audiences all around. Her acting gave life to a doll and made fans laugh and cry with her performance.

Gerwig also did not receive a nomination for her direction. Gerwig very much deserves a nomination because she brought to life the Barbie and the world she lives in. Gerwig made an artistic choice to create a fun and bubbly world while also truly showing the struggles of being a woman in society with powerful monologues and song choices.

Ryan Gosling spoke out about him receiving a nomination while his co-star and director did not.

“There is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie,” Gosling said in a statement provided to the media, “The two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.”

It seems that many people are overlooking the message of “Barbie” because Gosling’s role has almost taken over which proves the message Gerwig was trying to push. Ferrera’s nomination is well deserved, and many are glad to see she is being appreciated for her performance.

“Barbie” did not get nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, which is ridiculous because “Oppenheimer” did receive a nomination even though the styles are fairly simple, normal clothing attire. Not to discredit “Oppenheimer” in any way, but “Barbie” had fun, creative pieces. The styling is a key factor of who Barbie is. Many different wigs and makeup ideas had to be created and used, and it feels like a snub for the makeup designers and stylist of the production assuming they put many tireless hours and efforts into their work.

The Oscars do seem to miss the mark and have a reputation for doing this. It seems especially upsetting because of what “Barbie” stood for and the cultural impact it made on millions of people. Gerwig and Robbie created a beautiful film full of multidimensional elements that created a phenomenal movie, and it is sad to see that some of their work is being dismissed for awards and nominations.
