Oswego State club hockey loses first in-conference match-up

The Oswego State club hockey team returned home this weekend to face Mercyhurst University on Nov. 3. Oswego returned to their winning ways, as they dominated Mercyhurst by a score of 8-1.

Oswego opened up the scoring, as Nathan Hutchens found the goal just over 11 minutes into the first period, assisted by Braydon Deming and Josh Laravia. After some back-and-forth action, Oswego increased their lead to two off the back of Anthony Divita, assisted by Andrew Cardi. These two goals were the only scores in the first period, as Oswego led 2-0 heading into the second.

Adam Jubran brought the lead to three 16 minutes into the second period, his second goal of the season. Jeremy Keyes scored just a minute after Jubran, assisted by Ryan Saelens to bring the score to 4-0 going into the third period.

The third period is where things got heated, as there were a whopping 12 penalties assessed throughout the 20 minutes. Mercyhurst scored within 30 seconds of the beginning of the period, but Oswego responded with an Andrew Cardi score, assisted by Matt Cardi and Divita. Oswego tacked on three more goals to end the game: one by Deming, another by Trevor Jubran and the last by Keyes to bring the score to 8-1. Thomas McAleer had a stellar day in goal, defending 18 of the 19 shots he faced.

The Lakers moved on to face their conference rival, The College of New Jersey Lions on Nov. 4. Another great day in goal as goaltender Benjamin Di Fiore forced a shutout as the Lakers won 6-0.

Divita opened up the scoring for the Lakers, as he found the net six minutes into the contest, assisted by Andrew Cardi and Josh Matyasik. Nolan Sullivan scored next for the Lakers, his first goal of the season, assisted by Divita and Matyasik. The Lakers outshot the Lions 16-9 in the first period, as they led 2-0 heading into the second.

Six minutes into the second period, the Lakers led 3-0 after a score from Matt Cardi, assisted by Divita and Andrew Cardi. Not even a minute later, that lead was 4-0 as John Trum found his first goal of the season, assisted by Divita and Matt Cardi. “First goal of the season” became a theme in this game as Derek Boutin found the net, assisted by Bailey Doust and Sullivan. Trevor Jubran scored the last goal of the second period, and the game, 16 minutes in. He was assisted by Ryan Kemp and Keyes. The third period saw a defensive battle, as neither team was able to score; the clock ticked to 0 and the Lakers won 6-0.

The Lakers pummeled New Jersey in this contest, outshooting the Lions 53-22. Di Fiore defended all 22 shots that he faced.

The Lakers rested their captains in the Nov. 5 contest against the Lions. While outshooting the Lions 33-30, the Lakers still went on to lose their first conference game of the season by a score of 7-2.

The first period began with a Lakers goal, as Kyle Gilbert scored his first goal of the season unassisted. An elbowing penalty by the Lakers sparked a goal for the Lions, as they would tie the score 1-1 on the power play. The Lakers outshot the Lions 11-9 heading into the second.

The Lions jumped to an early lead in the second period, but Laravia responded with a goal of his own, assisted by Saelens and Carter McWilliams, to bring the score to 2-2. Three minutes later, the Lions scored once again to bring it to 3-2. Penalties killed the Lakers in this contest, as the Lions scored again on a power play, finishing the second period up 4-2.

Five penalties were assessed to the Lakers in the third period, as the Lions scored three early goals to bring it to 7-2. The Lakers put up plenty of great shots after this, but none of them found the net as they lost to the Lions.

The Lakers move on to face Drexel University in the Deb on Nov. 11, and the puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
