Oswego State volleyball suffers two losses in SUNYAC play

The Oswego State volleyball team returned home to face the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles on Oct. 27, at Laker Hall.

The Lakers and the Golden Eagles fought a tough battle in the first set, with each team receiving multiple points back and forth. Ultimately, the Golden Eagles won the set 25-21 through a service ace made by Kaitlyn Jewett.

In the second set, both teams continued the high intensity battle, and the Lakers took a 10-6 lead through multiple errors and three kills made by Sydney Chiffriller and Cara Simplicio.

It did not take long for the Golden Eagles to catch back up, as four kills and three errors in a row put them in the lead of 16-13. The Golden Eagles still had the advantage of being in the lead through service errors made by Chiffriller and Simplicio, along with multiple kills. Simplicio redeemed herself shortly after, receiving three kills, one which tied the set 23-23. Each team kept the score very close, each consistently scoring back-and-forth. Jordan Thompson of the Golden Eagles made a service ace, resulting in a score of 29-27 for the second set and the Golden Eagles taking another win.

There was no difference in play in the final set, as each team kept the score neck and neck. Kills made by Megan Loomis, Jewett and Thompson broke the close score, keeping the Golden Eagles in the lead 18-13. The Lakers did not let the Golden Eagles stay in the lead for long. Four kills made by Emily Zeisler, Chiffriller and Georgia Farry, along with attack errors and a service ace brought the score to a tie of 24-24. Alenna Willamson and Simplicio scored the game win against the Golden Eagles through one kill and a service ace.

Madison Gordon, Zeisler and Simplicio altogether totaled six aces for the Lakers the entire game, beating the Golden Eagles’ four aces.

The Lakers also played at home on Oct. 28, against the Geneseo Knights.

A majority of the first set saw a close score between the Knights and the Lakers. One kill made by Alisiana Muscoreil gave the Knights a six-point lead in the first set, with the score being 17-11. Although the Lakers managed to score six more points for themselves through two kills, two service errors and an attack error, the Knights stayed in the lead, winning the first set 25-16.

Kicking off the second set in the lead, the Lakers had a 5-3 run early on during this set. The Knights responded quickly, as Muscoreil had one kill and Julia Wallace earned two kills, which tied the score 6-6. Both the Knights and the Lakers earned points for themselves through kills and attack errors the rest of the set, keeping the score close. The Knights had a six-point run, bringing them ahead eight points in a score of 21-13. Getting a bit back on track, the Lakers scored four points for themselves after the Knights’ six-point run. Those four points were the last points for the Lakers of the set, as the Knights still took the lead in a score of 25-17.

The third set of the game began with the Lakers taking a 2-0 lead against the Knights. The Knights then quickly jumped to a six-point run through three attack errors and three kills, putting them in the lead 6-3. A service ace, along with two attack errors and two kills, saw the Lakers up six points, making them one point behind the Knights. They stayed closely following behind the Knights for a while during the third set, until the Knights managed to turn it around, putting them ten points ahead of the Lakers in a score of 24-14. Even though the Lakers rallied back within two points, the Knights won in a set score of 25-16.

The Lakers will travel to Rochester to face the University of Rochester on Nov. 3 in their final game of the regular season.
