Concert films hold allure, intrigue for fans priced out by ticket costs

There is no greater feeling than seeing an artist live in concert. Getting to hear their songs live and having the realization they are right in front of you can be an incredible experience. Unfortunately for many concerts today, it costs an arm and a leg to even sit in the nosebleeds. On top of that, trying to purchase tickets can feel like being in “The Hunger Games.”

Luckily, many artists realize that not all of their beloved fans can make it to their shows and have found a way for their fans to experience them. Artists like Taylor Swift (“Midnights”) and Beyoncé (“Homecoming”), who have both had successful tours this summer, have released concert films which highlight some of their respective concerts’ best moments, even giving some behind-the-scenes footage of their tours. Billie Eilish (“Happier Than Ever”), Justin Bieber (“Justice”) and Katy Perry (“Smile”) are among other artists who have released concert films over the years.

Personally, I think Harry Styles (“Harry’s House”)  should be the next artist to release a concert film. Styles was originally a member of the popular boy band One Direction (“Made in the A.M.”) until they announced they would be taking a hiatus in 2015. In 2017, Styles launched his solo career by releasing his first single “Sign of the Times,” which was featured on his debut self-titled album. From that point on, Styles has had many successes, even receiving three Grammys for his most recent album “Harry’s House” and hit single “Watermelon Sugar,” which was featured on his sophomore album “Fine Line.”

In July 2023, Styles wrapped up his two-year-long tour, known as “Love On Tour.” This tour was a turning point for Styles and his career. For example, Styles performed for 15 nights in a row at Madison Square Garden, selling out all 15 nights in late August and September of 2022. His 15 sold-out nights earned him a permanent banner in the Garden, alongside Billy Joel (“An Innocent Man”) and Phish (“Farmhouse”).

Styles also headlined a sold-out show at Slane Castle in Slane, Ireland, where some of the most iconic rock artists have performed, such as Queen (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) and David Bowie (“Major Tom”). This tour brought in a little over $600 million and is the sixth highest-grossing tour of all time according to billboard.com.

Since “Love on Tour” held such significance for both fans and Styles himself, it would be amazing to relive the best moments of that tour in theaters. Much like “Swifties” trying to score tickets to “The Eras Tour,” many fans were unsuccessful getting tickets for it. Thus, a concert film would also be amazing for those fans who missed out. Given that “Love on Tour” has been well over though, it may be a bit hard to produce a film for it now, especially if they did not film much of it in the first place. Due to the hype surrounding it, I believe his next tour will be even more successful and bring in a larger audience.

On the downside, this will make it even more of a challenge to purchase tickets. That is why a concert film could help fans get the experience if they luck out on being able to attend in person. Not only that, it would be great to get the behind-the-scenes experience of it all and some insight from Styles himself or his feelings about his success.
