Oswego State Volleyball traveled to Plattsburgh State on Oct. 6 to take on the Cardinals.
The Lakers had a strong start to the day, leading nearly the whole first set minus one servicepoint. They defeated Plattsburgh 25-19.
The second set found the Lakers trailing for the majority but they did not back down without a fight. Kills by Grace Taylor and Georgia Farry lifted the score to 23-20 and the set finished with Plattsburgh up 25-21.
Oswego stayed focused throughout the third set and tied the score six times within the first 11 points. Two kills by Cara Simplicio and Olivia Bunn boosted the Lakers to 19-16 however they were still down by three. Plattsburgh ran away with the rest of the set taking it 25-17.
The final set saw the Lakers trailing behind unable to obtain necessary scoring streaks to keep up with the Cardinals. A final score of 25-18 concluded the game.
Farry led the team with 10 kills, Simplicio had nine kills and one ace. Taylor contributed eight kills and three blocks while Chiffriller had three kills.
The following day, the Lakers headed north to SUNY Potsdam where they took on the Bears.
Oswego bested the Bears 25-22, an early scoring run proved helpful establishing the lead early on.
Potsdam left Oswego in the dust with their strong start. The Bears scored their last eight points consecutively. Unable to bounce back from the point difference, the Lakers dropped the second set 25-12.
Slowly but surely the Lakers worked their way up the scoreboard to find the Bears at a 21-21 tie. However the Bears rallied to get their last four points taking the third set 25-21.
The game was then 2-1 with the Lakers down; they needed to win the fourth set to keep the game going and for a chance to take the win.
Hungry for the win, Oswego held the lead for the entirety of the set minus the first servicepoint. They overtook Potsdam 25-18.
During the final set, Oswego led until the score tied up at 7-7. The teams rallied back and forth, point for point until the Lakers took off with the last five points securing the win 15-10.
Nyah Dias had a season high 31 assists for the game. Farry had 19 kills and two blocks, Chiffriller had 16 kills and one block and contributing 12 kills and four aces was Simplicio.
The Lakers hosted the New Paltz Hawks on Oct. 13.
The first two sets New Paltz showed their grit against Oswego owning multiple scoring runs and limiting them in points. The Hawks took the first two sets 25-15 and 25-12.
The Lakers picked up the pace during the third set to match the score 8-8. New Paltz kept answering back to runs made by Oswego which made the score 18-18. Points rallied back and forth until two kills by Chiffriller and an attack error by the Hawks boosted them to take the set 25-23.
Oswego was unable to duplicate the same game play for the fourth set which resulted in a 25-10 loss.
Game leaders were Simplicio with five kills and two blocks, Farry with five kills, four blocks, two aces, Emily Zeisler with 18 assists and Kaylee Troy contributed 12 digs.
The Lakers game versus SUNY Oneonta on Oct. 14 also doubled as the team’s Senior Night. Oswego honored Caitie Lilly, Kylie Lynch, Bunn, Taylor, Farry and Troy.
Oneonta blew away Oswego in the first set of the night with multiple scoring runs. Although the Lakers were hopeful with their seven-point run, it was not enough. The Red Dragons took the first set 25-18.
In the middle of the second set Oswego found their groove. A five-point run set them ahead of their competitor and they did not look back. The Lakers took the set 25-19.
A 15-15 tie in the third set sparked Oswego into action. Multiple kills by Farry and Grace Gdovin solidified their 25-20 win.
Oneonta led the fourth set for its entirety, while a mid-game seven-point run pushed them enough ahead to take the set 25-19.
For the final set of the night, the Lakers took the last seven of eight points of the game to get the win for Senior Night.
Simplicio had 15 kills, Farry had nine kills, two aces and five blocks. Dias had 15 assists and Zeisler had 17 digs and 16 assists. Troy added 19 digs.
The Lakers travel to Buffalo State on Oct. 20 to take on the Bengals.
