Oswego State women’s soccer struggles to win SUNYAC games at home

The Oswego State women’s soccer team faced the Plattsburgh State Cardinals on Sept. 30. It was a highly defensive match, as the Lakers were only able to put up nine shots, and they took their first SUNYAC loss of the season at a score of 0-1.

The first half saw a ton of back-and-forth action, and the Cardinals almost struck early, with a shot on goal just five minutes into the match, but goalie Perri Anderson made the save.  The Cardinals put an immense amount of pressure on Anderson, with four shots on the half. The Lakers responded in the first half with four shots of their own, three of them on goal. The Lakers had four corners in the first half, but neither team was able to gain enough momentum to score, and the half ended at 0-0.

The Lakers turned up their offensive aggression after halftime, keeping the pressure on the Cardinals for the first 20 minutes of the half. The Lakers put up two shots in this timeframe, before the Cardinals put up what was the only goal of the game at the 65:28 mark. The Lakers put up three more shots after this, but none of them found the net as the Cardinals won by a score of 1-0.

The Lakers ended the game outshooting the Cardinals 9-6 and each team had four shots on goal a piece. Brianna Winkler led the team with three shots and Anderson had two saves on the day.

The Lakers stayed home to face the SUNY Fredonia Blue Devils on Oct. 4. Both offenses fired on all cylinders in this matchup, but neither team was able to gain a solidifying lead on one another, and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

The first half saw the Blue Devils take a commanding lead early, as at the 7:28 mark they found the net to bring the score to 1-0. The Lakers took over the ball from there, putting up two shots within 90 seconds after the goal, followed by three shots in between the 11 and 13 minute marks. After the 20-minute mark, both teams exchanged shot after shot with the ball never finding the net, and the half ended with a Blue Devil lead at 1-0.

The Lakers outshot the Blue Devils in the half 7-5, with both teams shooting on goal three times. Anderson had two saves by halftime.

The Lakers dominated on offense in the second half, putting up shot after shot, until Luigina Serrao found the net at the 54:08 mark, she was assisted by Winkler. The control over the ball did not stop there, as the Lakers put up four more shots until Jackie Marquardt scored at the 70:31 mark, and assisted by Courtney Key. After a couple substitutions by the Blue Devils, they were able to regain control of the ball, and they scored to tie the game at the 85:36 mark. Neither team was able to score after this, and the game ended with a tie at 2-2.

The Lakers put up an outstanding 11 shots in this half, seven of those on goal. This means their total shot count on the day was 18. Katie Delgrosso led the offense with six shots, and she also led the team with shots on goal with three. Just under her was Serrao and Winkler, with three shots a piece; all of Serrao’s shots were on goal.

The Lakers move on to play the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons in another SUNYAC matchup, who the Lakers do not have the best luck against. The Lakers are currently on an eight-game losing streak against the Red Dragons, and they have not beaten the Red Dragons since 1996.

The Lakers hope to break this streak as they face the Red Dragons in Oneonta on Oct. 7. This matchup is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
