Oswego State volleyball wins back to back games in North Country

The Oswego State Volleyball team won back to back games in the north country against SUNY Canton and Alfred State on Saturday Sept. 30. The Lakers battled strong throughout to take down the Alfred State Pioneers in a sweep of three straight sets.

Oswego and Alfred rallied back and forth consistently until the score was tied 21-21. The Lakers got four straight points to take the first set. A kill by Georgia Farry, a service ace from Sydney Chiffriller and errors on the Pioneers’ part edged them ahead.

The second set was a nail-biter. Oswego trailed for the majority of the set until a five-point run tied the score 15-15, and a second run boosted them ahead further, making the score 19-16. Later, two kills and a service ace led Alfred up to 22 points, tying the score yet again. The Lakers had two kills that pushed them ahead, followed by a serving error that made the score a close 24-23. The serving error by the Pioneers gave Oswego the second set victory.

Likewise, the final set followed the same pattern. Oswego was ahead 20-18 but Alfred answered back with three points. Immediately after, the Lakers matched their three points. The final points rallied back and forth one by one with a kill from Farry ending the set and giving Oswego the win at 25-23.

Cara Simplicio led with nine kills, four aces and 12 digs. Chiffriller had seven kills, one ace and 10 digs. Farry had seven kills, one ace and six blocks. Emily Zeisler led in assists and Kaylee Troy in digs, both with 16 respectively.

Against SUNY Canton, the game went to all five sets to determine the victor. Oswego dropped the first and second set with hard fought scores both being 25-23.

During the third set the Lakers had an early lead and later a six-point run that made the score 12-4. Oswego dominated the rest of the set keeping the Kangaroos at bay 25-17. A tough match was battled to see who would take the fourth set. The Lakers held strong in the beginning before Canton rallied to tie up the game 15-15. Attack errors by the Kangaroos and two kills from Farry gave Oswego the final push they needed to best Canton 25-19. The Lakers led set five with a big offensive point run, forcing the Kangaroos to attempt to play catch-up the rest of the set. Oswego dominated the set 15-8 and took home a second win for the day.

Chiffriller had 10 kills, three aces and 18 digs. Farry totaled 17 kills and six blocks. Simplicio had 17 kills, Zeisler had a game high 32 assists and Troy 21 digs.

The Lakers gave the Morrisville State Mustangs a run for their money at home Tuesday Oct. 3. Despite their efforts Oswego dropped all three sets. The first set rallied back and forth consistently, minus two key scoring runs by Morrisville that proved important to their 25-22.

Oswego led early on in the second set until the Mustangs took over 9-8. They were bested by Morrisville’s multiple scoring streaks that they were unable to replicate. Despite suffering offensively, they benefited from many errors by the Mustangs. An attack error boosted the Lakers score to a tie of 22-22. A kill by Grace Taylor gave Oswego hope but they could not rally to push past Morrisville.

Oswego had a head start on the Mustangs offensively before they came back to tie up the score 7-7. A four-point run by the Lakers later edged them back up to match the Mustangs 14-14 who benefitted from multiple kills. Again, the teams rallied back and forth for quick points before once more tying at 21-21. Oswego was able to get one more point in between Morrisville’s last four but did not hold the Mustangs down. They lost the set 25-22.

Nyah Dias totaled two aces, 17 assists and 13 digs for the game. Farry led in kills with 10. Taylor had eight kills and three blocks.
