Fallin’ for films: Movie recommendations for Halloween, autumn season

As it is now sweater in the morning, regret it in the afternoon weather, fans of cooler temperatures can start to embrace their love for the fall season. It is time for delicious pumpkin cookies, apple picking and spontaneous trips to Old Forge, NY, at the peak of fall foliage.

In addition to all of your fall festivities, allow these Netflix recommendations to be your sweet companion.

1. “Hubie Halloween” (2020): This Adam Sandler (“You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah”) movie is soon to be your own fall go-to. The family-friendly comedy focuses on Sandler’s character, Hubie, the butt of everyone’s jokes, who becomes the town’s hero after saving his neighbors from a kidnapper on the loose.

2. “Rebecca” (2020): If you are into classic gothic romance novels, this one is for you. Soon after arriving at her new husband’s sprawling estate on the coast, a young woman feels a constant presence of his late wife, Rebecca (Lily James, “Yesterday”) — and she is determined to find out why. Based on the 1983 novel of the same name, this psychological thriller reminds us that even the most picture-perfect love stories have their secrets behind closed doors.

3. Bird Box” (2018): Watch a mysterious force threaten to decimate anyone who lays their eyes on “it.” Trust that this film will keep you on your toes the entire time. Academy Award-winning actress, Sandra Bullock (“The Lost City”), stars as Malorie in this popular thriller.

4. “Undefeated” (2011): With fall foliage comes two things: the musky-sweet smell of a leaf pile and the sounds of football on game day. This is an inspiring documentary about a Memphis, Tennessee high school football team trying to break their 110-year losing streak. The film also went on to win at the 2012 Oscars.

5. “Halloween is Grinch Night” (1977) would also be a legendary recommendation but unfortunately, Netflix does not stream it at this time. Originally a straight-to-television Halloween special, “Halloween is Grinch Night” follows a young Who’s encounter with the Grinch, who apparently terrorizes naive hikers with his “Paraphernalia Wagon.” The special oozes with vintage psychedelia and all the surreal imagery we love from Dr. Seuss (“The Cat in the Hat”).
