SUNY Oswego will be hosting the 18th annual Dr. Lewis B. O’Donnell Media Summit this semester with the exciting theme of “Behind the Scenes in Hollywood.”
This year’s Media Summit will touch on underrepresentation within the film industry. Students and faculty can expect an engaging discussion about producers, camera operators, stage crew and screenwriters. Alumni will provide perspective based on their industry expertise, as well as share their unique views on timely topics, such as the American writer’s strike.
Prior to the introduction of media summit panelists, networking opportunities will be provided by career connectors and Oswego alumni, who are happy to share advice and resources with inquiring students.
Confirmed panelists for the summit include Aunree Houston, vice president of account services and production at Paramount Global, and Juliet Giglio, screenwriter, novelist and tenured professor at SUNY Oswego.
SUNY Oswego last hosted the 2022 Dr. Lewis B. O’Donnell Media Summit on Oct. 26, 2022. The theme of the summit was “Reaching for the Summit: Underrepresentation in Sports Media,” fittingly coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the signing of Title IX.
The summit featured a panel of SUNY Oswego alumni who discussed various topics related to diversity in sports media. The discussions included diversity in sports media for athletes and representatives, mental health in athletics and how sports media covers crime.
Panelists discussed the underrepresentation of women and athletes of color in sports media and the necessity of diversity in media representation. They emphasized that diversity discussions need to translate into concrete actions and improvements in representation.
Alumni offered advice to students, encouraging them to travel, gain diverse experiences and embrace opportunities while advocating for their voices and perspectives in the media industry.
Panelists stressed the importance of continuing conversations about diversity and underrepresentation in sports media and urged action to address these issues in a meaningful manner.
The overall message of the 2022 media summit was to advocate for diversity, equal representation and inclusivity in sports media, acknowledging the importance of addressing mental health concerns and encouraging students to be proactive in their careers.
“Behind the Scenes in Hollywood” will take place Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. in Waterman Theatre at Tyler Hall. More information can be found at https://mediasummit.org/.
