Oswego State women’s soccer takes massive win against Keuka College

The Oswego State women’s soccer team clashed with the St. Lawrence University Saints on Sept. 17. The game went back and forth, but neither team was able to score as defense and goaltending took over the game in the 0-0 contest.

The game began with the Lakers taking charge by registering the first three shots of the match. Luigina Serrao fired the opening shot at the 17:14 mark, followed by attempts from Nicolette Joannou (32:21) and Amber McDermott (32:57). However, the Saints’ goalkeeper and defense stayed put, denying the Lakers.

As the first half went on, the Lakers earned two corner kicks at the 39:01 and 40:51 marks but were unable to capitalize.

Offenses broke out in the second half at the 75-minute mark. Brianna Winkler had a promising scoring opportunity, only to see it stopped by the Saints’ goalkeeper.

With the clock ticking down, the Saints mounted a late offensive surge in the final 15 minutes of play. However, the Lakers’ defense held firm, limiting the Saints to just two shots in the last 11 minutes, neither of which found the back of the goal.

In the dying moments of the game, the Lakers had one last chance to grab a win with a corner kick at the 88-minute mark. However, the Saints’ defense held strong, and the game finished at a score of 0-0.

The Lakers finished the day with six shots with three of them on goal.

The Lakers also faced the Keuka College Wolves on Sept. 19. The Lakers’ offense outclassed the Wolves, with the Lakers winning 1-0.

The first half of the game was characterized by a dominant performance from the Lakers, who controlled the pace and possession of the match. The Wolves found themselves primarily on the defensive as they worked tirelessly to keep the Lakers from scoring.

Due to primarily being on the defensive in the opening half, the Wolves had limited opportunities to mount an offense. In fact, they managed only a single shot on goal during the entirety of the first half. Even with four shots on goal in the half from the Lakers, the half remained scoreless.

The Lakers’ offensive momentum continued into the second half, where they maintained their aggressive approach. With 11 shots on the Wolves goal, the Lakers continued to pressure the Wolves goaltender. The Wolves, on the other hand, woke up and generated six shots of their own.

As the match wore on, it became even more evident that the contest was largely one-sided, with the Lakers consistently holding the ball in their offensive end but struggling to convert their opportunities into goals. The Wolves, despite gaining a brief spell of momentum, were unable to capitalize on their limited chances.

The turning point came at the 73:16 mark when the Lakers’ Katie Delgrosso found the back of the net, putting her team in the lead. Delgrosso’s goal, assisted by Winkler, brought the score to 1-0.

This goal proved to be a game-winner, as the Lakers denied any more offensive chances for the Wolves, with the game ending in a Lakers win at a score of 1-0.

The Lakers will begin SUNYAC play as they travel to face the SUNY Potsdam Bears on Sept. 23, followed by another in-conference game, as the Lakers will go to play against the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles on Sept. 27.
