Oswego State women’s soccer triumphs over Utica, marking strong start to season
After finishing the annual Fredonia tournament, Lakers begin season at a record of 2-1-1.
The Oswego State women’s soccer team beat the Utica University Pioneers in the Fredonia tournament, dealing them their first loss of the season.
Gabriella Martinez emerged as the hero of the day, netting the decisive goal for the Lakers just 26 minutes and 11 seconds into the contest. With this victory, the Lakers have improved to a 2-0-0 record, marking a promising start to their season.
The game began with a flurry of action, as Brianna Winkler wasted no time in testing the waters with a shot on goal just 4 minutes and 32 seconds into the match.
The first half of the game was characterized by a relentless offensive effort from both sides. The Lakers and the Pioneers combined for a staggering total of 13 shots, with seven coming from the Lakers and six from the Pioneers.
The pivotal moment of the match occurred at the 26:11 mark, just after the Pioneers had earned two consecutive corner kicks. Martinez capitalized on the opportunity and delivered the opening goal of the contest.
As the second half got underway, the Lakers’ defense tightened its grip on the game, allowing just one shot on goal from the Pioneers while launching five of their own.
The Lakers finished the day with 12 shots, eight of those being on goal and goalkeeper Perri Anderson had one save against the Pioneers.
The Lakers ended the Fredonia tournament with a hard-fought 1-1 tie against the Washington & Jefferson Presidents. The Lakers continued to exhibit their offensive firepower, recording 17 shots during the contest, with eight of them on goal.
The first half of the match saw both teams in a back-and-forth battle on the field. Luigina Serrao had the first promising opportunity of the game, coming close to finding the back of the net at 32:25 in the match.
The Lakers came out firing in the second half, with a 13-minute display of dominance. During this period, the Lakers managed to earn five shots and three corner kicks, putting immense pressure on the Presidents’ defense.
At the 82:59 mark, the Presidents were able to break the scoring standstill with a goal, but less than 20 seconds after falling behind, Amber McDermott stepped up to the plate and delivered a crucial goal that tied the game at 1-1.
The Lakers carried the momentum throughout the final minute of the game, taking chance after chance, with the Presidents’ goalkeeper having to make two saves, but the Lakers were not able to score and tied the Presidents 1-1.
The Lakers left the tournament with 29 shots, 16 of those being on goal. Anderson left the tournament making three saves total.
The Lakers also returned home to face the Hamilton University Continentals on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The Lakers unfortunately found themselves on the wrong side of a 2-0 final score as the Continentals’ offense broke through and earned the win.
The Lakers started the game on a strong note, as within the first 11 minutes of the match, the Lakers had two shots, and earned two corner kicks. However, the Continentals would gain control of the ball, notching a goal just over 16 minutes into the game.
The Continentals would get their second goal still in the first period, just over 36 minutes into the game. However, into the second period, Anderson made three crucial saves at the 53:33, 62:05 and 80:27 marks to stay in the game.
The Lakers were unfortunately not able to score anywhere in this game, and they suffered their first loss to bring them to 2-1-1 on the season.
The Lakers will stay home this week as they face the St. Lawrence University Saints on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m.
