All eyes on St. Lawrence for Oswego State field hockey

After losses to Ithaca and Houghton, Lakers begin season at 1-4 record.

The Oswego State field hockey team has fallen to a record of 1-4 after losing to Ithaca College and Houghton University this past weekend.

The Lakers took on the Ithaca College Bombers on Friday, Sept. 8 in Ithaca.

Unfortunately, the Lakers found themselves facing an early uphill battle in the contest. The Bombers wasted no time, launching a relentless offensive assault that left the Lakers on their heels. The Bombers managed to net three goals in just over the first 11 minutes of the match, leaving the Lakers facing a 3-0 deficit.

The Lakers’ defensive struggles would continue, as they would go on to allow three more goals from the Bombers, sealing a 6-0 win for Ithaca College.

The most notable aspect of this matchup comes as the inability of the Lakers offense to generate any opportunities.  The Bombers’ defense continued to frustrate the Lakers as Oswego State finished the day with zero shots on goal in their performance.

KY Phillips, the Lakers goalkeeper, recorded 16 saves.

The Lakers continued their road trip, to face the Houghton University Highlanders on Saturday, Sept. 9.

The Lakers’ offensive woes continued through this game, as they were only able to put up two shots in the contest with one on goal.  Erin Schaefer was the lone player on the team with her one shot on goal.

However, the Lakers defense certainly stepped up to the plate, as they held the Highlanders to their lowest number of goals in a game this season.  Julia Alvey had a defensive save right at the goal line in this contest.  Phillips ended her day with eight saves.

The Lakers would finish their weekend with only two shots to their name, but showed incredible adjustment on defense, holding a team like the Highlanders that averaged just under five goals a game prior to Saturday, to just three on the day.

The Lakers also returned home to face the Keystone College Giants on Sept. 13. The Lakers were able to turn their momentum around against the Giants, notching a win by a score of 2-0

The Giants controlled most of the first quarter, with four shots and four penalty corners in the first seven minutes.  However, the Lakers took control of the game and Nancy Pagliaroli was able to score, with assists coming from Kaitlyn Jordan and Natalie Shields.

The next two quarters slowed down the pace, as the teams would exchange fouls back and forth.

Jordan extended the lead for the Lakers late in the fourth quarter, earning her first goal of the season and giving the Lakers the 2-0 win. Phillips ended the game with two saves on the day.

The Lakers finished the day with five shots, all on goal, while the Giants had ten shots, with only four being on goal.

The Lakers will stay home this weekend to face the St. Lawrence University Saints on Sept. 16. .at 1 p.m.
