Oswego State softball splits games against Brockport, look to finish season strong

Oswego State softball rallied together to bring home a win against SUNY Brockport on Saturday April 22. With a doubleheader at Brockport on Saturday, the Lakers won the first contest by a score of 6-0. Oswego had seven hits and four runs batted in (RBIs).

Lakers senior outfielder Samantha Morgan hit a spectacular home run in the fourth inning of the game. Morgan recorded two hits and two RBIs against Brockport in the Lakers 6-0 win. Oswego State senior Madison Hoeflich and Oswego State freshman Krista Souders each recorded one RBI. Pitching went well for the Lakers. Senior Lakers pitcher Fiona Higgins allowed zero runs and only a total of four hits through all innings.

After the first win by the Lakers, Brockport bounced back and won the second game on Saturday by a score of 8-3. Oswego senior Samantha Morgan contributed two hits and also an RBI during the second leg of the doubleheader. Senior Madison Hoeflich also contributed with two runs. Brockport played steady in the second matchup and they played like a different team after they lost 6-0 to the Lakers.

The pitching in this game was different for the Lakers and for Brockport. They had to switch up pitchers because of fatigue and game time. R. Stroh for Brockport pitched all innings and only allowed three runs on the day. Oswego used three different pitchers and had a less successful second half of the day.

Oswego and Brockport remain in the bottom half of the SUNYAC standings. With Oswego having six points and Brockport only four, reaching the SUNYAC playoffs for either team will be a stretch. For the Lakers, they have three remaining games on their schedule. All three games will be doubleheaders and against another SUNYAC matchup.

Starting on Thursday, April 27, Oswego faces off against SUNY Fredonia with a doubleheader. The day after, April 28, the Lakers will face off against Buffalo State, Buffalo State is currently tied for first in the SUNYAC conference with SUNY New Paltz. They both have 18 points and a conference record of 9-1. Winning these doubleheaders is tough for any team. The Lakers will have to push their hardest to end the season on a high note and win some conference games. Oswego State softball could have their season ended on May 6. The Lakers will travel to Cortland on May 6, for their final doubleheader of the season.

Notable highlights for the Lakers this season include wins over three different conference opponents. Starting with SUNY Potsdam on Saturday, April 8, the Lakers won by a score of 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader at Potsdam. Another SUNYAC opponent that the Lakers beat was SUNY Oneonta. On Friday, April 14, the Lakers took one victory against Oneonta by a score of 5-1 in the first leg of the doubleheader. More recently, Oswego softball took a comfortable 6-0 victory over SUNYAC opponent Brockport. The Lakers are not out of SUNYAC playoff contention just yet, but contention is beginning to close up. Because there are doubleheader games, coaching strategies and other factors will play into the game because the players are playing for multiple hours during doubleheaders. With six total games left against SUNYAC opponents, the Lakers will be looking to finish strong and perform well against their rival SUNYAC teams.
