Oswego State women’s lacrosse picks up two big SUNYAC victories

The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team has been tearing through their schedule en route to third place in the SUNYAC conference.

The Lakers have won six of their last seven games, with the one loss coming to one of the top teams in the SUNYAC, SUNY Geneseo. So far on the season, the Lakers are 9-3 overall which is tied with both Geneseo and SUNY Cortland. However, due to the SUNYAC loss to the Knights the Lakers sit one game back of the two frontrunners.

Sela Wiley continues to terrorize her opponents day-in and day-out, her versatile play style has helped her to collect 62 points on 34 goals and 28 assists in only 12 games played. Against SUNY Potsdam on April 7, Wiley scored two goals and racked up eight assists in the Lakers 21-3 victory over the Bears. On April 12 against SUNY Brockport, Wiley scored four goals and collected two assists to round out her six-point day.

With her four goals against the Golden Eagles, Wiley eclipsed the 100 career goals mark with the Lakers.

Isabella Lembo and Shae McConnell have also been X-factors for this Lakers team. Both being pure scorers, Lembo and McConnell have lit up the stat sheet on offense. Lembo has tallied 44 points on 32 goals and 12 assists while McConnell has collected 34 points on 28 goals and six assists. This trio has been a huge factor in the team’s success so far this spring.

Although she plays on the Lakers’ defense, Julia Quirk has put up her fair share of goals through 12 games played. Starting in all 12 games, Quirk has amassed 25 points on 23 goals and two assists.

Sarah Kamide has taken on the majority of the work in net for the Lakers. In her 12 starts, Kamide has allowed 61 goals and has made 70 saves. She currently holds a 6.25 goals allowed average (GAA) and a .534 save percentage (SV%). Her GAA and SV% have helped lead the Lakers to the top of the SUNYAC leaderboard in both categories.

The Lakers only have four SUNYAC games remaining before the SUNYAC playoffs, as they look to end the season strong. First they face Plattsburgh State who is currently sitting in 7th place in the SUNYAC. The Cardinals sit towards the bottom of the league in goals per game at 8.64, while having the fourth highest GAA at 12.40. The Lakers are 2-0 against Plattsburgh dating back to 2019.

Next they play against Buffalo State who sits right behind Plattsburgh in the standings, in 8th place. The Bengals have the third-lowest points-per-game average in the SUNYAC at 10.30, but they are more towards the middle of the pack when it comes to goals allowed, allowing 11.30 which is good for fifth-best in the conference. All-time, the Lakers have a 19-10 record against Buffalo State dating back to 1994. The Lakers have won the last nine matchups in a row.

The Lakers’ final game of the season comes against Cortland on the road. Since the Lakers first faced the Red Dragons in 1995, the Lakers have gone 0-32 against them. The Lakers will look to break that streak as they head into the end of the regular season later this month. The Red Dragons will be a formidable foe as they are third in the conference in goals per game with 13.17, and second in goals allowed average with 7.00.

But the Lakers have a few steps to go before they get to that matchup, starting on April 15 against Plattsburgh State.
