Men’s lacrosse brings winning streak to four games, 5-2 record after 1-2 start

The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team looked to continue their winning ways against conference rival SUNY Oneonta at Laker Turf Stadium.

The action started quickly as Oneonta midfielder Evan Kelly scored the first goal just three minutes into the game. Oswego did not take long to get on the board and tie the game up. Lakers midfielder Max Brodman struck back with a goal two minutes later. After that it was a defensive battle with both teams struggling to gain the upper hand and score the goal that would put them up. That moment came in the final five seconds of the first quarter when midfielder Trey Jones scored to put the Lakers up 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.

There was much more offense in the second quarter as teams bounced back-and-forth scoring goals. Oneonta bounced back from Oswego’s last-second goal in the previous quarter with two goals of their own to put them up 3-2.

Oswego continued to put up a fight and scored another goal at the five minute mark which tied the game up at three apiece. Then, in the next two minutes scored three goals back-to-back as Oneonta would score to go up one, and Oswego tied it back up with another goal. Oneonta scored the final goal of the second quarter with two minutes and the Lakers went into halftime down 5-4.

The Lakers did not start off the third quarter well as Oneonta grew their lead even more with a goal at the 12 minute mark and a goal at the minute mark as the Red Dragons went up 7-4. The Lakers bounced back as Brodman netted his second goal of the game less than a minute later.

The scoring continued another minute later as Oswego attacker Corey O’Connor scored another goal and put them only one goal behind. But the Lakers would be shut down minutes later as Oneonta scored another goal and put them up by two goals late in the third. The Lakers did not stay down however as with a minute left Liam Sexton netted a crucial goal and put them within only one goal as time expired.

The fourth and final quarter of the game was all Oswego and they did not let up. It started out as another defensive battle as both teams struggled to maintain position and set up possible scores.

At the eight minute mark, midfielder Gavin Elston found a gap to the net and scored one of his two goals that day. His second goal came a minute later as Elston would score again and put the Lakers up 9-8 with seven minutes left. The Lakers continued to put the pressure on and scored another to put them up two goals.

The Red Dragons tried to come back but the defense did not allow that and the Lakers put the final nail in the coffin when midfielder Jason Dongelewic scored his second goal of the night and brought the Lakers to 11 goals. The game finished with a score of 11-8 in favor of Oswego.

The win puts the Lakers win streak at four and going on the road for the next few games they will need all the momentum they can get. Next, the Lakers are set to face SUNY New Paltz on April 15.
