Oswego State baseball gets back on track with sweep of SUNY Fredonia

The Oswego State baseball has been on a tear recently. The Lakers are 3-0 in their last three games and they do not look to be slowing down any time soon. They are coming off a three-game series against the SUNY Fredonia Blue Devils in which they won all three soundly.

Their first game against Fredonia was their closest game in which they won 5-2, but at no point during the game were the Lakers losing. Kieran Finnegan was on the mound for the Lakers in this game and put up stellar numbers once again throwing five innings, giving up no runs and only allowing four hits. Finnegan also struck out eight batters. Alek Conrad closed the game for the Lakers pitching two innings and giving up no runs and only three hits. Oswego had multiple hitters have good games at the plate as well.

The most notable of the games was the catcher Anthony Barone who went 4-4 and scored a run. Centerfielder Brian Brezosky and first baseman Tishawn Featherstone both went 2-3 and both scored a run, Featherstone also had an RBI.

In the Lakers’ second game they had their biggest margin of victory, winning 12-1. There were many standout players in this game, most notable being the catcher Colin Williams who went 3-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. The designated hitter Tishawn Featherstone went 2-3 with an RBI and the third baseman Blake VanDreason went 1-2 with a home run and three RBIs as well as a run scored. The standout pitcher from the game would be Sean Dertinger who threw two innings, gave up no hits and recorded three strikeouts.

The third game that the Lakers won was a game where they scored 12 runs, again winning soundly 12-7. The top hitter in this game was left fielder Julian Drew who went 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Other players who had decent games at the plate include Jacob Levine who went 1-3 with two RBIs and Tishawn Featherstone who went 1-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.

The Lakers are now hot coming off those three wins and they look to continue the team’s success. Their stats so far as a team have been looking up as they have a team battering average of .289 and an OPS of .807. A couple of the hitters who have been keeping those numbers up are Julian Drew, whose hitting .319 through the season, Owen Parliment, whose been hitting .304 and Tishawn Featherstone, whose hitting a solid .290 so far.

When it comes to pitching the Lakers have had some success as well with Finnegan as the top player who has a record of 2-2 and has pitched 32 innings with an ERA of 2.25. He has also recorded 35 total strikeouts. Another pitcher to look at is Larry Citrola who has pitched 13.2 innings and has an ERA of 2.63.  He has also recorded 18 strikeouts.

On the field, the Lakers’ continue to struggle in that aspect of the game according to head coach Scott Landers. The Lakers recorded five errors in the team’s three-game series and that just adds to the growing total of 50 errors in just 19 games, but besides that the team has still been looking up. The three-game win streak all in conference play is a huge boost for the team and they shoot right back up in the standings with these wins.

The Lakers’ next games come soon as they play a three-game series against their conference rival SUNY New Paltz. These are three crucial games that the Lakers are looking to win, as they will put them in prime position near the top of the leaderboard. New Paltz is coming off a three-game series in which they got swept by conference leader SUNY Cortland so they will surely be looking to bounce back against Oswego.

The Lakers will want to ride this momentum, as they will be on the road for the next week and a half on a five-game trip before returning home to play.
