Golf competes for first time in spring season

The Oswego State golf team competed at the Hershey Cup in Hershey, Pennsylvania on April 2 and April 3. The Hershey Cup is hosted by the University of Rochester, who finished the first round tied for fourth place. This is the Lakers’ first outing since Oct. 2 when they competed at the Empire 8 conference. The Lakers closed out round one of the tournament with 336 points, putting them in last place out of 15 teams. 

Coming in first place with 307 points was Rensselaer Polytechnic, followed by York College PA and Franklin & Marshall tied for second place with 308 points. Wittenberg University and the University of Rochester tied for fourth place with 309 points. 

Kenyon College finished round one in sixth place with 313, and Gettysburg College followed in seventh place with 320 points. New York University came in eighth place with 323 points, and McDaniel College came in ninth with 324 points. 

Allegheny College and Stevens Institute of Technology tied in tenth place with 326 points. Skidmore College finished with 328 points, and St. John Fisher University and Stevenson University tied in 13th place with 329 points. SUNY Oswego finished 15th with 336 points. 

The Lakers’ lowest shooter was graduate student Ryan Fecco who closed out round one with 78 points. Sophomore Jake Owens came in second with 83 points. Freshman Evan McDonald finished round one with 86 points, and senior Oliver Wolland had 89 points. Sophomore Tyler Donohue finished with 92 points.

Day two of the tournament ended a bit better for the Lakers where they finished 14th out of 15 teams. Their combined total for both days was 662. St. John Fisher finished in 15th place only one point behind with 663. 

Rensselaer Polytechnic finished first with a combined score of 608. The University of Rochester came in second place with a total of 611 points. In third place was York College PA with 614 points. Wittenberg University came in fourth place with 615 points.

Franklin & Marshall finished with 620 points, putting them in fifth place. Kenyon College was one point behind them in sixth place with 621 points. In seventh place was Skidmore College with 631 points. Gettysburg College came in eighth place with 633 points.

New York University and Allegheny College tied for ninth place with a combined total of 636 points. In 11th place was McDaniel College with 638 points and Stevens Institute of Technology came in 12th with 644 points. Stevenson University finished in 13th place with 650 points.

Fecco remained the Lakers’ lowest shooter with a combined total of 158 points, with Owens right behind him with 159. Wolland had a combined total of 172 and Donohue had 179. McDonald finished with the highest combined total of 180 over the two day tournament. 

The Lakers will compete next at the Empire 8 Spring Championships on April 15 and April 16 in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
