Books are not killing children, guns are

The fact that lawmakers are more concerned with banning drag shows and books than they are with gun control proves there is a serious problem in our country.

If the 130 mass shootings in three months does not concern you, you need to check your morals.

The shooting that happened in Nashville, on March 27, has brought up many arguments. One of which is that the reason the shooter, Audrey Hale, targeted the school was because they are transgender. This is a ridiculous argument and it is only bringing more fear to the trans community.

The reason mass shootings continue to happen are because people have easy access to guns. The government continues to ignore its people who are begging for gun control. No one is trying to get rid of your right to bear arms, however they are trying to stop the continuous murder of children.

If you look at the statistics of mass shootings in the United States, you should be horrified and embarrassed that it has gotten this far. But rather than taking steps to make our country safe from violence, state governments are trying to ban books and drag shows that will expose their kids to a different lifestyle than their own.

Lawmakers have been meeting to discuss America’s divide on guns as if there is more to be talked about. During a hearing, Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz said, “You know why you don’t hunt with a deer with an AR-15? Because there’s nothing left. And there’s nothing left of these kids when people go into school and murder them while they’re trying to read. You guys are worried about banning books? Dead kids can’t read.”

Lawmakers are trying to ban books such as “Gender Queer” by Maia Kobabe, “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling and many more. They claim books like these expose their children to things they are too young to experience. As someone who has read every single one of these books as I was growing up, I can confidently say that all they did was teach me things I had never known before.

These lawmakers are more scared of the fact that their children could be a part of the LGBTQ community than they are of the possibility of them being murdered at school. Not only are they ignoring the safety of children all over the country, but they are acting like being gay, trans or anything other than straight is a crime.

Our country is taking more and more steps back by the day. It is time to get angry and make our government listen to us. Gun control activists stormed the capitol building in Tennessee on March 30 and they made sure they were not ignored. People need to continue to put pressure on the government for change, or else there will be no future generations because they will all be dead.
