Lakers softball falters after strong start to season

At the end of their spring break trip to Florida, the Oswego State softball team suffered defeats in two games on March 17.

The Lakers’ first matchup was against the Lasell University Lasers, and the Lakers took a quick 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run RBI single from left fielder Christina Kania. The Lasers responded in the next two innings, with a solo home run in the second followed by an RBI in the third.

Oswego managed to take a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning, assisted by an error at third base, and an RBI double hit by catcher Mattison Phinney.

Subsequently, the game took a turn for the worse as the Lasers scored five runs in the fifth inning, and an additional five runs in the sixth inning, ultimately securing a 12-4 victory.

Right fielder Madison Hoeflich went 2-3 at bat with a walk for the game, and Kania would lead the team with two RBIs.

The Lakers second matchup was against the Carleton University Knights.

The Knights jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first with a solo home run, but the Lakers responded with a solo home run of their own in the second inning as Fiona Higgins homered deep right, tying the game with a score of 1-1.

In the third inning, the Knights managed to score a run, regaining the lead. However, the Lakers were able to tie the game 2-2 in the fourth due to an error at first base.

Again, the Lakers would not manage to hang onto this one, as the Knights homered in the fifth to make the score 3-2, then tacked on four more runs in the seventh as they won the game by a score of 7-2.

Hoeflich went 2-3 at bat for the second time, and center fielder Samantha Morgan had an RBI in this game.

The Lakers also traveled to Rochester on March 22 to face the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers in a double-header.

The Lakers started the first game with three runs in the second as outfielder Ariana Guinassi singled in an RBI for the Lakers followed by a double for two RBIs from middle infielder Krista Souders.

There would not be much action until the sixth inning where the Tigers clawed their way back in with a home run to tie the game 3-3.  The Lakers would jump them in the seventh with three runs, with RBIs from Samantha Morgan, Fiona Higgins and Christina Kania.

The Tigers would not give up without a fight, and scored two runs, but the Lakers were finally able to break their losing spell by beating the Tigers by a score of 6-5

Guinassi led the day, going 2-3 at bat and Souders also led the team in RBIs.

The second game saw little action until the bottom of the seventh as the Tigers had the bases loaded with only one out. However the Lakers were able to escape this game with a double play and tied 0-0.

Souders had another impressive game at bat, going 2-3.

The Lakers will come home for two games on March 28 to face Houghton University. The games are scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
