Penfield Loves You Day lets Library give back

Penfield Library hosted its traditional “Penfield Loves You Day” on Valentine’s Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Penfield Loves You Day” is open to all students and ensures that those passing through feel loved on the holiday.

The event included snacks, Starbucks coffee, button-making, a photo booth and a visit from the Office of Sustainability on campus.

The event has been going on for a long time, at least since 2013 according to Emily Mitchell, the library’s assistant director.

“It’s a chance to get people in and make your day a little better,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell also expressed the importance of showing different kinds of love, apart from the heteroromantic love that is typically exemplified on Valentine’s Day.

The Office of Sustainability hosted a table discussing their seed share program, and distributing free seeds to students, encouraging them to find time to grow their own herbs, flowers, or vegetables. They also advertised their tree tapping program, which allows the office to produce their own maple syrup. The office plans to host a “Maple Brunch” at Fallbrook Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to noon with more details to follow shortly.

Jon Mills, the campus sustainability coordinator, expressed that the office was grateful to have the opportunity to work with Penfield on this event.

Mitchell explained that Penfield often collaborates with the Office of Sustainability and is working toward becoming certified as a sustainable library.

The library hosts “Penfield Loves You Day” each year, and there will likely be further opportunities to attend the event in the future.
