The Oswego State wrestling team was defeated by SUNY Cortland 24-13 heading into the final meeting of the season on a five-meet losing streak.
The Lakers currently sit with a 4-10 record on the season, with their last win coming at a meet against Penn College on Jan. 14.
Of the ten matches that took place on Feb. 11, the Lakers only took three from the Red Dragons. Junior and team captain, Charlie Grygas, won his match against Pat Ross in the 174-pound division by major decision. This earned the Lakers four points towards their total.
Lakers freshman Anthony Vasquez defeated Roman Jellick by fall in the 285-pound division, earning a team high six points for Oswego.
The last three points the Lakers earned during the meet were won by senior Logan McGloine. On his Senior Day, McGloine defeated Mike Barker in the 157-pound division. Another senior that was honored on senior night, Kian Pacheco, was defeated by Gabe Lynch in an exhibition bout.
During the meet, the Lakers won three of the seven exhibition matches against the Red Dragons. Freshman Kevin Arriaza won his match versus Ryan Holt by way of fall at five minutes. Freshmen Joey Ribitzki and Wayne Earl both defeated Noah Orser in their exhibition matches.
As the regular season starts to wind down, the Lakers have one player in position to move on to the NCAA tournament. Charlie Grygas is currently ranked fifth in all of Div.III in the 174-pound weight class. He will look to improve his ranking in the Lakers’ last meet.
Grygas has one final tune-up before the NCAA tournament starts on Feb. 25. The Lakers will head over to Allentown, Pennsylvania for the Mideast Futures Tournament on Feb. 19.
