Lakers bounce back after tough 4-3 loss versus SUNY Geneseo

After the Oswego State men’s hockey team lost to SUNYAC rival SUNY Geneseo 4-3 on Feb.3, the Lakers bounced back with wins over SUNY Brockport and Morrisville State.

After Geneseo scored three unanswered goals over the first two periods, the Lakers found their stride in the third, scoring three straight goals with time winding down. Lakers senior defenseman Quinn Warmuth, scored the game-tying goal which electrified the fans in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. This back-and-forth game went to overtime tied 3-3. Unfortunately for the Lakers, Geneseo forward Stefan Miklokos scored the OT winner and recorded his second goal of the night.

This win helped Geneseo stay close to the top of the SUNYAC rankings alongside Oswego State and Plattsburgh State. The Lakers took advantage of their power play time, scoring two goals when Geneseo was down a man. The Knights did not let up in the end and a solid display during overtime gave them the upper-hand in this game.

One day later, on Feb. 4 the Lakers faced off against SUNY Brockport. The Lakers got back into the win column against the Golden Eagles with a final score of 4-1.

Lakers juniors Noah Bull and Jackson Arcan both tallied a goal to start the scoring in the second period. Brockport responded shortly after with a goal but it was not enough. Lakers sophomore Daniel Colabufo gave the Lakers a 3-1 lead at the start of the third period.

Quinn Warmuth, scoring in back to back games, tallied his sixth goal on the season and sealed the deal for the Lakers with the fourth and final goal of the contest. The Lakers again put on a solid display on the power play.

In the Lakers last two games, they have scored two goals while on the power-play, both season highs for the Lakers. Brockport is currently in last place in the SUNYAC men’s hockey rankings. Following the win, Oswego sat as the second seed in the conference.

Taking the trip out to Morrisville State was worthwhile for the Lakers on Feb. 8. The Lakers banded together and played a strong game to win against Morrisville by a score of 6-0. Lakers senior forward Tommy Cahill scored first for the Lakers with a goal in the first period of play. The Lakers scored three times in the second period with goals from Shane Bull, Alex DiCarlo and Arcan

Arcan recorded two goals on the day when he added one more in the third period. Lakers freshman Connor Gatto scored his third goal of the season when he also scored in the third period against Morrisville. DiCarlo recorded one goal and two assists against Morrisville, adding more to his team lead in goals and points, as the Lakers breezed past Morrisville.

Looking ahead, the Lakers have a week and half before their final two SUNYAC games against Buffalo State and SUNY Fredonia. The Lakers hope to replace Plattsburgh as the top team in the SUNYAC with wins in these games. If the Lakers were to finish as the first seed in SUNYAC rankings, they would receive the benefit of a first round bye.

On Feb. 17 the Lakers faceoff against Buffalo State, and then against SUNY Fredonia on Feb. 18, both in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena at 7 p.m.
