Thanksgiving break travel preparations

Thanksgiving break is nearly two weeks away and SUNY Oswego is helping students prepare for transportation and housing plans.

The campus dorms will close on Nov. 19 at 10 a.m and reopen on Nov. 27 at 12 p.m. Students who need to remain on campus to complete an academic or athletic obligation, students experiencing home insecurity, or students whose home address is out of the state or out of the country may apply to reside in their residence hall over break. Applications must be approved prior to break. Unapproved students will not be allowed to reside in their residence hall over the break.

The cost of staying at a dorm over break is $280. There are a few exceptions to this rule, such as students who live out of state or international students. The Village will remain open free of charge, but guests will not be permitted. There will be no meals provided during break and mail will be paused. Students can purchase additional Laker Dining Dollars to use at open on campus retail dining locations or off-campus partners.

Students who intend on staying at The Village over the break should contact Annabelle Hipp, Village community director.

Dorm resident students in need of housing over Thanksgiving recess can contact their hall director or make arrangements through the Office of Residence Life & Housing located at 303 Culkin Hall.  The deadline to sign up for Break Housing will be Nov. 15 at 4:30 p.m. To apply for break housing, students must complete the Thanksgiving break housing application on myhousing.oswego.edu.

Prior to leaving the residence halls for break, hall directors remind students to close and lock the windows, empty their wastebaskets, turn off all lights and alarm clocks, generally clean the room and lock the door. Students will be billed for trash left in the room.

Residence hall staff members will check all rooms after the building has been locked to make certain that rooms are secured and that there are no obvious hazards. Once this inspection has been completed, student rooms will not be entered unless there is a special reason to do so.

In such cases, a note will be left informing the residents of the time, date, and reason for entry. Also, the residence halls are patrolled regularly by University Police during the recess period and any unauthorized persons entering, attempting to enter, or found in the building will be subject to arrest. The discovery of the possession of any materials which violate state laws or college regulations may be confiscated and may lead to disciplinary action.

Thanksgiving Break shuttle buses will be available for departing campus on Nov. 18 and 19 and returning to campus on Nov. 27. The shuttles will make stops at the Regional Transportation Center (RTC) and Hancock International Airport in Syracuse. Tickets can be purchased through the Box Office for $10.50.

The Office of Residence Life and Housing suggests that students who need to get to Syracuse use the Centro bus. Centro buses run from Oswego to Syracuse making stops along the way in Fulton, Phoenix and Liverpool. Popular stops on this route include the shopping area in Clay, Destiny USA in Syracuse and the Regional Transportation Center where students can connect to other bus and train services.

The reduced fair cost for a Centro bus ticket is $2, cash only, each way. Reduced fare requires a valid SUNY Oswego student ID and Student Association sticker.

For students traveling long distances without a car the Office of Residence Life and Housing suggests connecting through Syracuse and then traveling via bus, train or plane. Hancock International is the closest airport, while RTC is the major departure point for trains and buses. Both hubs are about an hour’s distance from SUNY Oswego.
