Lakers look to finish season strong to clinch playoff berth

With just two games left in the Oswego State field hockey team’s season, they are looking to push forward and finish the year with a winning record. Currently, the Lakers field hockey team has a record of 7-7.

During the most recent SUNYAC matchup for the Lakers, they had a hard-fought battle on their Senior Day against SUNY Brockport. Brockport won by a score of 1-0. Both teams hustled and worked hard, but Brockport had the edge after an early goal. After the goal it was a battle of defenses and Brockport came out on top. Laker senior year goalkeeper, Erica Scheblein, played very well even after conceding the game’s only goal. She tallied nine saves on 10 shots.

With two SUNYAC games left on the Lakers schedule, including one on Oct. 22 against SUNY Geneseo, the Lakers are going to need to work together against a strong Geneseo side to get their first conference win. Geneseo has an overall record of 12-2 and a conference record of 4-0. Geneseo is in first place in the SUNYAC field hockey standings. They are going to be a tough test for the Lakers, but if the Lakers pull away with a win over Geneseo, it could stir up the SUNYAC seedings just before the playoffs start in November.

Playoffs for SUNYAC field hockey start Nov. 2. SUNYAC playoff seeding is entirely based on conference play. Geneseo and SUNY Cortland have locked up the top two spots in the SUNYAC standings. Geneseo is in first place with a conference record of 4-0, and Cortland, who have a conference record of 4-1, are in second place.

The Lakers are on the outside looking in at the playoff standings, unless they win out and a team in the SUNYAC top four loses out. The Lakers have struggled in SUNYAC play this season, so stirring up the seeding is going to be the Lakers’ primary goal for these last two games. They are currently in last place in the SUNYAC standings, so if they win over any SUNY school, it will most likely alter the seeding. Despite having an overall record of 7-7, they are currently 0-4 in SUNYAC play. The seven games that they have won so far this season do not contribute to their chances of making the playoffs.

Winning the two SUNYAC games they have left will be a great highlight to end the season on and it will give a confidence boost to the Laker players who are returning next season.
