Dunkin’ is serving pumpkin spice lattes again, the leaves are on the cusp of changing color, and there is finally a chill in the air. That can only mean one thing for Halloween lovers: it is time for a movie marathon.
Netflix has many options when it comes to movies. They offer anything from friendly to downright scary and the choices can get pretty overwhelming. Ahead, Netflix’s best Halloween movies available to viewers now.
1.) “IT”
“IT” is a straight-up horror flick. The film is very scary, and not just in a typical gory slasher or jump scare way; it generates actual tingles down your spine. The evil clown storyline, based on Stephen King’s (“Fairy Tale”) classic, is very intriguing and mysterious during the whole runtime. Therefore, it does not allow for a single dull or misplaced moment. If you are down for a night of terror, then “IT” is perfect.
2.) “Monster House”
Nothing sets the spooky Halloween mood more than a movie quite like “Monster House.” It boasts a top-notch crew, memorable voices that fit the characters perfectly, a great story, an ingenious backstory, and a twisty-turny ending. This is one of those movies where all the planets align. The motion-capture animation is the same as that used in “The Polar Express,” where the characters have so much personality you feel like you are watching real people. But even more important is the story, which is approaching Pixar quality. The characters and animation revolve around the story, rather than the other way around.
3.) “Hubie Halloween”
“Hubie Halloween” attempts to get a lot of comedy mileage out of Adam Sandler (“Hustle”) yelling like he is about to die. This Halloween film is probably the most watchable of Sandler’s Netflix films. It is not a masterpiece, but it is pure, gross, harmless Halloween fun, and definitely more of a treat than a trick.
4.) “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”
If you are looking for something spirited, supernatural, and fun with a menacing terror of the dark arts, then Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka, “Swimming With Sharks”) is your gal this fall. The show has quality cinematography and likable characters. However, be prepared to take a fun and thrilling ride over to the most recent season, where the bloody teen adventure becomes more deranged than ever.
5.) “YOU”
“YOU” is a mysterious dark romanticized series written from the antagonist’s perspective and is vividly fascinating. While watching this show, you must be patient and let it take you on a ride, which explores the contrast of the human psyche. Thanks to the main character Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley, “Gossip Girl”), “YOU” is pure cinematic brilliance in a deranged forking way.
6.) “The Rental”
What is meant to be three days of relaxation quickly descends into a nerve-wracking stay at a stranger’s home. Two couples on an oceanside getaway grow suspicious that the host of their seemingly perfect rental house may be spying on them. Before long, what should have been a celebratory weekend trip turns into something far more sinister, as well-kept secrets are exposed and the four old friends come to see each other in a whole new light. Basically, “The Rental” is here to remind you to always be on guard. You never know who might be watching (or listening) to you.
7.) “Natural Born Killers”
The 1994 film, “Natural Born Killers” describes the misadventures of Mickey (Woody Harrelson, “The Man From Toronto”) and Mallory (Juliette Lewis, “Yellowjackets”): outcasts, lovers, and serial killers. They travel across Route 666 conducting psychedelic mass slaughters not for money, not for revenge, just for kicks. Glorified by the media, the pair become legendary folk heroes; their story told by the single person they leave alive at the scene of each of their slaughters. The film is surrealist work of stunning visuals and cinematic shots that will leave you feeling as if you just took a strong dose of something. Watch this if you enjoy watching media that can elicit feelings of anxiety, exhilaration, and resentment within only a few minutes of watching.
You and your friends may now rest in peace, watching Netflix films which cater to your spooky, scary and silly needs, and remember: Halloween is just around the corner.
