Fifteen years ago, Disney released a movie that captured the hearts of many members of Generation Z: “Enchanted.” The movie featured a unique blend of animation and live-action and was the first to jump the line between a stereotypical Disney fairytale world and the real world. “Enchanted” sent Giselle (Amy Adams, “Dear Evan Hansen”), the typical princess with an animal sidekick and a prince she has only just met but was convinced she was bound to marry, to modern-day New York City.
After its release, “Enchanted” seemed to receive a sort of cult following. But with no sequel announced for years, fans had to resign themselves to watching the first movie ad infinitum.
Enter “Disenchanted,” the long-awaited but unanticipated sequel. The announcement seemed to come out of the blue when it was made in 2020. Finally, Disney released the full trailer during D23, the company’s biennial convention.
“Disenchanted” will feature most of the original cast, including James Marsden (“Sonic the Hedgehog 2”) returning as Prince Edward and Patrick Dempsey (“Devils”) as Robert.
The trailer opens back with Giselle and Robert and their newborn child moving to Monroeville, which seems to be a small suburb. The area is not what they anticipate, and certainly is not the fairytale ending that they all would have liked.
One exciting aspect of the sequel is the arrival of a new villain, Malvina Monroe (Maya Rudolph, “Big Mouth”). Malvina seems to hold some sort of power in her community, and we get to see her twice in the trailer: once dressed casually, the second time, wearing a crown and a fairytale outfit. It is exciting to speculate about Malvina’s origin and character, and given Rudolph’s history of hilarious and versatile performances, there is no doubt she will make the most of her character.
Giselle’s conflict begins when she magically wishes for a fairytale life, propelling her world into chaos. Suddenly, her modern world transforms into a magical one, but it seems as if everything is in danger.
Giselle herself seems to be pulled between two personalities, sometimes acting as her normal self but also functioning abnormally, seemingly pulled into a more evil persona. She snaps back and forth from the two personalities flawlessly, and it will be exciting to watch Adams portray this version of her character.
The costume designs are as flawless as before. One of Giselle’s dresses is reminiscent of her classic curtain dress, and Prince Edward sports an equally extravagant costume, this time in a royal purple. Some of the New York City characters will get to wear these costumes as well, and it will be interesting to see the way these pan out.
One of the most iconic aspects of “Enchanted” was its music. Featuring phenomenally catchy songs with a lighthearted feel and gorgeous lyrics and vocals, music is undeniably what gives the movie its heart. With songs by Disney genius Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid”) and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (“Wicked”), the music is bound to be completely spectacular. The same team is returning for “Disenchanted,” so viewers can expect several more wonderful songs to add to their playlists.
Though many fans were initially skeptical of a sequel, the new preview may comfort them. With a great cast and team behind the movie, it certainly seems that “Disenchanted” will leave fans with even more to love. It is set to release on Disney+ on Nov. 24.
