Laker Quick Recap: Men’s Soccer vs. SUNY Fredonia

The Oswego State men’s soccer team was able to hold on for a tie with SUNY Fredonia on Sept. 17. The Lakers and Blue Devils split 1-1 after an early goal from the opponents. Each team took a point in the SUNYAC standings on the first day of conference play in the 2022 season.

Pregame Notes:

  • The Oswego State Lakers enter the contest with an overall record of 2-3.
  • SUNY Fredonia holds a 1-3-1 record overall.
  • This is the first game of SUNYAC conference play for both teams.
  • Oswego State head coach Dan Kane is seeking his 100th win this afternoon.

First Half:

  • GOALS:
  • SUNY FREDONIA: Hudson Kwiatkowski (CK) @ 4:24 from Jacob Gennaro
  • OSWEGO STATE: Kyle Gehnrich @ 17:29
  • SUNY Fredonia striked early in the contest with a goal off a corner kick. Jacob Gennaro able to provide the service to Hudson Kwiatkowski.
  • Oswego State defender Liam Rothar was dealt the red card at the five minute mark. The defender was carded for serious foul play. The Lakers played on with 10 players the rest of the contest.
  • The teams would trade direct free kicks. Both teams able to defend.
  • The physically began to pick up between the two SUNYAC squads. Plenty of fouls being called by the referee crew.
  • Kyle Gehnrich picked off a ball from SUNY Fredonia goalkeeper William Richardson and put the ball low past the keeper for a Lakers goal. Gehnrich with his second goal of the season.
  • More corner kicks for both sides. No chances were able to come off of those set pieces.
  • GOALTENDING:
  • OSWEGO STATE: Matt D’Arpino (zero saves on one shot)
  • SUNY FREDONIA: William Richardson (two saves on three shots)

Second Half:

  • SUNY Fredonia started with the ball in the half.
  • Another Blue Devil corner kick. Lakers netminder Matt D’Arpino with the save and the clear for Oswego State.
  • The Blue Devils gained possession with plenty of opportunities in the attacking third. Oswego State holding off SUNY Fredonia but unable to develop any offensive chances.
  • The teams continued to trade corner kicks in the second half. The advantage would go to the Blue Devils but the Lakers keep the ball out of the back of the net.
  • A big block from senior defender Caleb Munski to keep the score tied. The Blue Devils applied the pressure in the final 10 minutes of the contest.
  • In the final minutes, the Blue Devils almost found a shot on target but the Lakers deflected the ball wide.
  • GOALTENDING:
  • OSWEGO STATE: Matt D’Arpino (three saves on four shots)
  • SUNY FREDONIA: William Richardson (four saves on five shots)

Post-game:

The Oswego State Lakers were able to push through playing a man down for a majority of the contest and come away with a tie. Both teams secure one point in the SUNYAC standings. Kyle Gehnrich gets back on the box score with his tally in the game. Matt D’Arpino made a total of three saves on four shots on goal.

A Look Ahead:

Oswego State men’s soccer will take a couple days off before preparing for their match at SUNY Brockport on Sept. 21. Another chance to gain points in the SUNYAC conference as the Lakers look to move up the standings.
