New series ‘Cars on the Road’ revives beloved Pixar franchise

Disney’s relationship with Pixar takes them back to the ‘90s when they released the first 3D animated film “Toy Story” in 1995. Since then, the two companies have created almost 20 different films together with their expertise.

One of these series was started in 2006 with “Cars,” a movie that features Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson, “Marry Me”) traveling to California for the Piston Cup Championship race. After that movie, the “Cars” series would have two sequels and a spin-off series called “Planes.”  The offshoot did not really take off, no pun intended, but “Cars” is still one of Pixar’s best series. What better way to capitalize on an already well-made franchise than to create a miniseries filled with wacky adventures starring McQueen and his best friend Mater (Larry the Cable Guy, “Jingle All the Way 2”)?

“Cars on the Road” is currently a nine episode miniseries which tells the story of Mater and Lightning going on a road trip and sightseeing the country on their way to Maters’ sister Mato’s (Dana Powell, “Bridesmaids”) wedding. Originally, Mater was going to go on the trip alone, but Lightning decides to keep him company for the trip so he will not feel so down while going to see his sister. Lightning offers to let Mack, his friend, drive them, but Mater declines, saying the road trip would not be as enjoyable if they are not driving themselves.

After watching the nine episode series, it is a good watch. There are plenty of different stories and each of them are unique in their own way. You never know what place they could head to or what characters they will meet. That is one of the ways they keep the show interesting. The theme song also has a western feel which is enjoyable.

Despite its pros, some of the jokes fall a little flat. However, the series still has little bit of everything, including action segments and some comedy. One of the episodes even takes place in a haunted hotel. It is always a treat with what each episode introduces to the story. At many points in the series, new characters are introduced. However, to know who these characters are, you will have to watch it for yourself. There is only one major problem with the series: It is available on Disney+ and just recently came out. Thus, it is fresh, and it is not quite confirmed if we will be seeing more episodes. Most likely, it will depend on the reviews.
