Bring the popcorn and M&M’s: September Netflix recommendations

As we are about halfway through the month of September and entering fall mode as temperatures begin to drop, some people may want to start to find more things to watch. Whether you are beginning to settle into your routine or looking for other things to do here at Oswego, here are some popular titles available on Netflix this September.

Already streaming since Sept. 1 is “Love in the Villa,” a 2022 Netflix Original Film about a young woman who takes a trip to romantic Verona, Italy after a breakup, only to find that the villa she reserved was double-booked. She then realizes she will, unfortunately, have to share her vacation with a cynical British man. You can probably foreshadow what may happen from there. This movie stars Tom Hopper (“The Umbrella Academy”) and Kat Graham (“The Vampire Diaries”). Viewers may enjoy this because of its comedic anecdotes and cozy feel.

Also streaming since the beginning of the month is “Rock of Ages,” a full-length musical comedy that was produced in 2012. “Rock of Ages” will take you back to the time of ‘80s rock bands playing guitar solos with unsurprisingly big egos and sporting even larger hair. This Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical features biggest hits from Night Ranger (“Sister Christian”), REO Speedwagon (“Can’t Fight This Feeling”), Pat Benatar (“Hit Me With Your Best Shot”), Twisted Sister (“We’re Not Gonna Take It”) and more.

If you are looking for a classic fairytale remake, “Snow White & The Huntsman” is the perfect option for you. This update on the original tale finds a young Snow White (Kristen Stewart, “Spencer”)  battling the Evil Queen (Charlize Theron, “F9”) with the skills she learned from the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth, “Spiderhead”) sent to kill her.

A personal must-watch recommendation is “The Bridges of Madison County.” Clint Eastwood (“Cry Macho”) stars and directs this romance movie about a photographer wandering into the life of Francesca Johnson (Meryl Streep, “Don’t Look Up”). Another is “The Notebook,” which is a regular addition to Netflix. The romantic movie is based on the Nicholas Sparks (“Dear John”) novel. In 1940s South Carolina, mill worker Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling, “The Gray Man”) and rich girl Allie (Rachel McAdams, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”) are desperately in love, but her parents do not approve. When Noah goes off to serve in World War II, it seems to mark the end of their love affair. In the interim, Allie becomes involved with another man (James Marsden, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”). When Noah returns to their small town years later, on the cusp of Allie’s marriage, it soon becomes clear that their romance is anything but over.

A show that will keep you on your toes, the Netflix Original series, “Cobra Kai” features released its fifth season on Sept. 9, continuing the story of Daniel (Ralph Macchio, “The Outsiders”) and Johnny (William Zabka, “Hot Tub Time Machine”) 30 years after “The Karate Kid.” Fans have been very pleased with the thrilling rise of action the new season has provided since its release on Sept. 9.

For those who are in search of a crime thriller, “End of the Road” is a Netflix Original Film starring Queen Latifah (“The Equalizer”). This film is about a cross-country road trip that becomes a highway to hell for Brenda, her two kids and her brother Reggie (Ludacris, “Crash”). After witnessing a murder, the family finds itself in the crosshairs of a killer. Now alone in the desert, Brenda fights to keep her family alive.

“Do Revenge” is another new Netflix Original Film, which stars Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) and Camila Mendes (“Riverdale”). Two high school student cohorts, Drea and Eleanor, have their lives upended and become rejected by their high school. After a topless video of herself initially intended for only her boyfriend Max (Austin Abrams, “Euphoria”) is leaked, Drea feels shame. Eleanor becomes an outcast when rumors about her holding another person down and attempting to kiss her begin to spread. Drea and Eleanor form a friendship and agree to go after one another’s bullies. This subverted Hitchcockian dark comedy features the scariest protagonists of all: teenage girls.

If you are itching to reminisce about your childhood, “Pokémon: The Arceus Chronicles” Netflix Original Film has just been announced. A visit to the region, Sinnoh, turns into a high-stake adventure when Ash (Sarah Natochenny, “Seal Team”), Pikachu (Ikue Otani, “One Piece Film: Red”), Goh (Zeno Robinson, “Cars on the Road”) and Dawn (Emily Bauer, “Tribe Nine”) find themselves aiding a powerful Pokémon to confront a looming threat. The special is set to premiere before a live audience at the 2022 Pokémon World Championships in London, and then it will become available to stream on Netflix on Sept. 23.

Lastly, to end the September list of Netflix recommendations is the new Netflix Original Film, “Blonde.” From her volatile childhood as Norma Jeane through her rise to stardom and romantic entanglements, this film blurs the lines of fact and fiction to explore the widening split between Marilyn Monroe’s (Ana de Armas, “Knives Out”) public and private selves. With Andrew Dominik (“This Much I Know To Be True”) directing, this is sure to be a Monroe film for the ages. It will be released on Sept. 28.
