Film Laker Review

Laker Review ranks director Jordan Peele’s horror films

Jordan Peele (“Key and Peele”), a comedic actor-turned Oscar nominated director and winner for Best Original Screenplay, took the world by storm with the release of his film ““Get Out”” He has since gone on to have a growing fanbase for him and his films.

Mixing political messages, bone-chilling horror and a bit of laughs, his movies so far will be watched, loved and talked about for decades to come. Here is a ranking of the films Peele has released thus far.

3.) “Us”

“Us” is Peele’s most conventional horror film. It is his second feature, though arguably worst. The film takes the idea of a doppelganger and flips it to make it a lot more disturbing and horrifying than the concept already is. “Us” is very greatly executed in terms of editing and pacing. The film rarely seems boring or inconsistent. “Us” can have viewers laughing and shaking at the same time. Not to mention the absolutely incredible performance of leading actress Lupita Nyong’o (“The 355”). Where the film’s quality diminishes is the writing. There are quite a few plot devices that can get distracting. The whole mirror to society that Peele is getting at here is not too well stated and there is a lot more questions than answers. It just could have been way better. The pluses of the film revolve around the scares and humor and not exactly the messaging, it is an acceptable horror film, it is not game changing and is the most underwhelming.

2. “Nope”

“Nope” is the newest summer blockbuster. Grossing over $150 million worldwide, more than doubling its budget. The story of Californian horse ranchers and wranglers who discover an otherworldly being is a very unique concept. Amazing filmmaking is well represented here with an incredible cast who all do so well, terrific cinematography from Hoyt van Hoytema (“Dunkirk”) and special effects. The film also features incredibly terrifying visuals and a disturbing monkey named Gordy. The themes of capitalism and exploitation are well displayed and of course, as usual to Peele, some themes of race are also present. It is definitely a top film of 2022 and will continue to be ranked high in his filmography. However, there is still one film that is better.

1.”Get Out”

“Get Out” is Jordan Peele’s magnum opus. His debut film is a game changer and a cultural milestone. “Get Out” takes a plot of a “meet the parents” type story and turns it into an excellent psychological thriller horror film about racism. The screenwriting and directing are exquisite; both impressive for a debut. The acting of this movie is a highlight. Daniel Kaluuya (“Black Panther”) brought one of the best performances of that year, let alone ever. He made it so real and so believable, a perfect pair to the film. All the other performances are also incredible. All the elements to the story in this film are woven together well and its message is delivered beautifully. This movie gives many chills. Even its not so scary moments end up being terrifying because of its subject matter. This movie will continue to be talked about forever because of its tough reality within the fiction. Its real and satirized message of racism, the experience being a black man in America and white liberalism will be discussed for many millenniums to come beca”Us”e of its unique and clever way to bring these to light in a world and industry where that is not the most common, making it a top horror film of the decade and the top of Peele’s filmography.
