Laker Game Preview: Women’s Lacrosse vs. Plattsburgh State

The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team hosts Plattsburgh State in the final regular season game of the 2022 campaign. The Lakers and Cardinals battle for the final spot in the SUNYAC Championship as the teams enter the contest separated by 1 game. Oswego State heads into the game with a 4-4 record while Plattsburgh State sits at 3-5. The Lakers celebrate Senior Day as well with a 12:00 p.m. game time at Laker Turf Stadium.

Season History

OSWEGO STATE

The Lakers enter the contest with an overall record of 5-10 after dropping their most recent game to SUNY Brockport on Wednesday in Brockport, New York. Oswego State has struggled to string wins together over the course of the year but have taken care of business in terms of conference play.

Sela Wiley broke the 50-point total on Wednesday after a solid performance against the Golden Eagles. The captain leads the team in goals with 36 total tallies. Wiley sits at 10th in the SUNYAC in terms of points. Newcomer Madison Davis is second on the team in assists with 23. The newer Laker also has 22 goals for a total of 45 points in her first season with the Oswego State team. Sophomore Shae McConnell has also been able to put the ball in the net with 30 goals in her 15 games played. Currently, there are 6 players averaging over a point per game in terms of offense.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Lakers look to one netminder who has taken control of the defense. Freshman Sarah Kamide enters Saturday’s contest with over 900 minutes in between the pipes for the Lakers. The Watertown, New York native averages 12.11 goals against with a .431 save percentage. Kamide’s save percentage puts her 6th in the list of goaltenders in the conference.

PLATTSBURGH STATE

The Cardinals up in the North Country have had an up and down season as the Plattsburgh State squad enter the game with a 5-8 overall record in 2022. Unlike the Lakers, the Cardinals head into today’s game with a 1 game win streak after defeating SUNY New Paltz 12-9 earlier this week.

The Plattsburgh State offense averages 9.69 goals per game after 13 games played this season. Emily Caoili leads the team in points and assists with 37 total points on the season. Caroline Noia and Lindsay Guzzetta are tied for the goal lead with 23 each.

In between the pipes, 3 Cardinals have split time for the team. Johanna Malone, who has seen more action this season, holds a 13.68 goals against average with a .368 save percentage. Lilla Nease and Alexa Cassidy have also spent time in net for the Cardinals.

Matchup History

Oswego State and Plattsburgh State have only played against each other once even though there is a deep history between the 2 schools. The Plattsburgh State program was started in 2019 and Oswego State won the first contest between the 2 teams. The Lakers defeated the Cardinals 23-4 on the road back on Apr. 13th, 2019.

Players to Watch

OSWEGO STATE: Sela Wiley

The captain is going to be essential this afternoon ensuring the Lakers make it to the post season tournament. Wiley hit the 50-point mark on Wednesday and was able to find the twine on multiple occurrences. The offense will run through the junior this afternoon as she will need to get some of the other players involved.

PLATTSBURGH STATE: Emily Caoili

Emily Caoili is the head point getter for the Cardinals squad. Caoili will be the spark the Plattsburgh State squad after the bus ride. The senior attacker will need to be on the score sheet this afternoon if the Cardinals want to head to the playoffs.

Prediction and Final Thoughts

The Oswego State squad looks to head back to post season for the first time since the 2019 season. The Lakers made it to the semifinals round and lost to SUNY Geneseo. For Plattsburgh State, the Cardinals will need to shut down that Oswego State offense in order to stay in the hunt for that playoff spot. If Oswego State plays sound defense, the Lakers should find there way on offense for another victory.

Prediction: 10-6 Oswego State
