Men’s tennis played host to the St. Lawrence Saints this past Wednesday afternoon. The Lakers entered the set with a 2-3 record, looking to make some late-season impact against a 7-8 Saints team.
This was the Lakers first matchup in almost two weeks, the last one coming on April 13 on the road against the Utica Pioneers. The rust surely showed for the Lakers as they struggled to get out of the gates. The Saints dominated the Lakers in every way possible, including a 24-1 doubles win.
The Saints threw out the tandems of Nathan Turtledove and Ben Moolman, Cole Hamilton and Guy Holbrook, Edvin Stranberg and Cameron Pankau to combat the Lakers’ duos of Anthony Salerno and Ethan Bannochie, Justin Schwab and Justin Piotrowski, Nic Sawler and Hawke Kosofsky. Only Salerno and Bannochie recorded a point for the Lakers. Not much seemed to change for Oswego State in singles action as the Saints swept all six singles matchups. Nico Haet, Adam Heilbronner and Broderick Pinto of the Saints each beat Salerno, Schwab and Bannochie 12-1 in their singles sets. The other three sets did not go any better for the Lakers as St. Lawrence’s John Hill-Edgar, Kenden Aguilera and Cameron Pankau swept Piotrowksi, Sawler and Luis Liriano of the Lakers 12-0.
This loss for the Lakers increases the gap between victories for the squad, their last coming all the way back on Sept. 26, 2021 against St. John Fisher College at home. The Saints on the other hand find themselves sitting at .500 as we head into the latter half of the season following their big victory. Oswego State will not have to wait long to get back on the court as this weekend the Lakers round of their season with a two game split series against the Oneonta Red Dragons.
