Rough Wednesday for women’s tennis

By Alex Abrahmovich

The Oswego State Women’s Tennis team had a day to forget on Wednesday, Apr. 6th against SUNY Geneseo, as they dropped their match by a total score of 9-0.

The Knights of Geneseo are one solid team, as they improve to 6-4 on the season and pick up their second conference win, and improve to 2-0 in SUNYAC play. The Lakers fall to 3-8 on the year and drop their fifth conference game, putting them with a 1-5 SUNYAC record.

The game got out of hand pretty quickly for the Lakers, and it did not get any better as the game went on. Debora Win and Jenna Wilson lost in first doubles by a score of 8-1, Alyx Sperling and Rafaela Dimitrakopoulou lost in second doubles by a score of 8-2, finishing with Mary Louise Pontius and Emily Lussier ultimately losing by a score of 8-3, but they were able to take three sets. The Lakers were beaten in all 6 of their singles matches as well, pushing SUNY Geneseo to a 9-0 victory.

IT was the first game the Lakers had played since October when they were defeated by SUNY Cortland 7-2, so the 9-0 loss against SUNY Geneseo could have been a game where they had to get the rust off. Not having played in months can definitely have a negative effect on how a team plays, so getting back into the swing of things should most certainly help the Lakers. Another reason the Lakers shouldn’t be discouraged after the loss and how the season has gone is that they will be returning nearly half of their team, 6 out of the 11 players on the team are either freshmen or sophomores.

In a shortened 2020-21 season for the Lakers, they were able to fight for a 3-3 record and improved from the prior season where they finished with a 3-10 overall record. This season has not gone the way that they have wanted, but it is their first full season in two years. Head Coach Sean Evans has a lot to be proud of when it comes to his team, despite their 3-8 record on the year. Prior to their two most recent losses, the Lakers had actually scratched off two wins in a row when they defeated The Sage Colleges by a score of 6-3 and took down Utica College by an impressive score of 8-1. This team obviously has the potential to do big things, they just have to find their game.

The Laker’s next match will be on Saturday, Apr. 9th when they take on the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons. In the overall history of this matchup, Oneonta is 5-0 against the Lakers on the court, and their most recent matchup took place last season. This would be a perfect time for Oswego State to turn its season around and finish on a high note, and pick up a win against a rival and conference opponent.
